In poker a bad beat is essentially extreme bad luck. Anyone who’s played poker enough (and understands probability) knows that bad beats happen all the time because they’re actually quite common.
The chance of somebody pulling a one outer on the river is roughly 2%. This is when they only have one card to draw that can save them from losing. If it happens it will usually be greeted with disbelief, frustration and anger from the one who just lost.
But when you look at the actual probability of pulling a one outer, it’s not vastly different to rolling 1 and 1 or 6 and 6 with two dice (2.1% for a one outer vs 2.7% for the dice rolls). Nobody shouts “OMG that is unbelievable” when you need and roll a two in a game of Snakes and Ladders.
There are forums full of bad beat stories from people lamenting their bad luck. If you’re a bad player you’ll only ever play strong hands (this is bad because you’ll become so obvious that a good player will avoid playing you).
