And Finally…

by Toby Young
16 February 2022 11:29 PM

London Calling is two days late this week, thanks to a computer malfunction at James Delingpole’s end. We had to record this one via Zoom, which means James sounds like an intoxicated Dalek at times. But we thought it would be better than nothing.

In this week’s episode, I tell James I’m in Mexico, one of the few countries you can travel to if you haven’t been vaccinated. After James has mastered his jealousy, we go on to ask whether the Freedom Convoy will prove Trudeau’s undoing, speculate about who will succeed Erin O’Toole as leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, puzzle over Prince Andrew’s £12 million legal settlement with a woman he’s never met, get into a debate about the future of the Monarchy (James is a republican), and, in Culture Corner, continue to obsess about the implausibly muscly body of Jack Reacher in the new Amazon Prime series, which we both love. The series that is, not Reacher’s six pack.

You can listen to the episode here and subscribe on iTunes here.

Of all the photoshopped images of Toby and James we’ve seen, this I think is my favourite. I don’t want it to be photoshopped. I want them to form a mariachi band called Los Escépticos.

Ah, James Delingpole and his hunting. I remember in Brideshead Revisited the unquestioning faith people had in the restorative power of a day’s hunting! I suspect though that James is wrong about it being the most exhilarating thing you can do. Apparently bull running is something else. I remember a quip about how the only real sports are motor racing, rock climbing and martial arts, the rest being only games. On that basis, I would have to admit to not being much of a sportsman (though apparently things like darts are sports these days).

Discussing Trudeau as well of course and his/her emergency powers. Henry VIII powers? Blimey, he makes the old rogue look moderate! “Progressive” values? If that’s what they’re progressing to, I think I’d rather not! Times like this that I wonder if the food storers have a point.
question is will politics be any different when this is all over.

And I’ll say another thing. What an inspiration those truckers were! We will not forget. It will be like the St. Crispin’s day speech:

“And gentlemen in England now abed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here”.

Their names will be honoured forever.

The St. Crispin’s Day speech from Henry V – The Poetry Society

Are still. The police they shook hands with and embraced at the border will never forget it. Some will be changed forever.

Indeedy. People can tend to think that the police are like robots, but they really aren’t and do get affected by these things. A similar thing with the peaceful revolution in the Philippines in (I think) the 1990’s. At the end of the day, there will be police with friends and relatives who are truckers and know all too well what they have been through for no good reason.

Everything will be over sooner or later, even the new Communist tyranny. My hunch is that things will be settled one way or the other by around the middle of the century at the latest.

I have (belatedly) started listening to London Calling. It’s a good antidote to U.K. column news which often fills me with fear.

But wait, I thought Toby was in favour of the vaccines? Is he one of the great unvaxxed too? Or did he just pick Mexico to make James jealous?

Aren’t there quite a lot of countries you can get in as an unvaccinated person now? Negative test, yes, but that and no 10 days self isolation when back in the UK

Yes, lots of countries don’t require a vaxx, just a test

The point about Mexico is that it is one of only four countries that require neither vaxx nor test

The others being Costa Rica, El Savador and recently added Norway

Mexico and Central American countries are dumps where you’re likely to be robbed and/or murdered, and the streets of Norway are full of icy slush at this time of the year.
Our freedoms have been curtailed and it looks unlikely that they’ll ever be given back – and all we have now is another rollout of ‘vaccines’, this time for the 5-11 year olds, and the 4th jab soon to be ‘offered’ to those who have already had the 3rd.
And then you’ve got the elderly who weren’t going to go abroad anyway, probably because they are too old, saying “I wasn’t planning on going abroad anyway”. I’m alright, Jack.

It’s easy to cherry pick negative aspects of any country, especially these days, but Mexico and Norway and both popular tourist destinations so some people don’t agree with your assessment of them.

Freedoms have been and are being restored and that’s a fact. Whether it will last or be a complete rather than a partial restoration, is hard to tell, IMO. I’m neither optimistic nor pessimistic, I simply choose not to spend much time thinking about it, just do what I can to resist, and make the best of the life I have.

I’d love to see the vaxx programs exposed for the evils that they are, but I probably won’t live to see that. That makes me sad and angry, but I refuse to ruin my life on account of those bastards, but neither do I pretend everything is wonderful.

Costa Rica has long been known as the only stable country in central America. I went there a few years ago and had absolutely no problems at all. A beautiful place with nice people who politely corrected me on my Castilian Spanish accent. The only reason I wouldn’t go now is because of having to wear a mask on a 14 hour flight.

Anywhere you can go (on a plane (or ship) ) without wearing a mask?

I seem to remember that Costa Rica was said to be the happiest country in the world at one time.

Before you travel to England – not fully vaccinatedBefore you travel to England you must:

  • take a COVID-19 test – to be taken in the 2 days before you travel to England
  • book and pay for a COVID-19 PCR test – to be taken after you arrive in England
  • complete a UK passenger locator form – to be completed in the 48 hours before you arrive in England

You will need to enter your PCR test booking reference number in the passenger locator form.

When you arrive in England – not fully vaccinatedYou do not need to quarantine when you arrive in England.
You must take the COVID-19 PCR test that you booked before you travelled.
You can take the test any time after you arrive and before the end of day 2 at the latest. The day you arrive in England is day 0.
If the test result is positive or unclear, you must self-isolate.

So you take the risk of a ‘positive’ being thrown up, and, like a certain member of this forum, don’t dare to break quarantine and self-isolate for 10 days (or more) for fear that Test & Trace will be keeping an eye on you.

Will this rule for ‘the unvaccinated’ ever be removed?

Can you please stop reiterating the entry rules to GB. We know them, too, and not only because you post them here almost every day!

Pretty sure TY has stated he’s not vaxxed and I don’t think he’s ever been an advocate for it, just that he hasn’t attacked the mass vaxx program explicitly, though as the months pass the articles in DS are more and more damning of the vaxxes

I think he was considering using a “vaxport” if necessary to watch QPR. I don’t think he ever particularly wanted to take this experimental medication.

A Spanish university friend of mine, from a posh diplomatic family, posh schools, etc, did not sosialise with South American and Mexican students because apparently they did not know how to speak and pronounce espanol properly but sounded crude and peasanty instead.

Ha. As I understand it, South Americans don’t do the daft “lisp” thing, so if I ever learn Spanish, I’ll do it their way and risk sounding uncouth to the Spaniards. The only Spanish I know currently is from binge watching “Narcos”, and I don’t think much of that would go down well in polite society however you pronounced it.

I am Mexican. It is sad to find out that there still are a few snobbish, idiotic Spaniards who think like your friend. Latam Spanish in general -Mexican, in particular- is just different than the one spoken in Spain. Actually, Mexican Spanish is very well accepted everywhere in Latam. My wife and I have been lauded twice in Spain -by locals- about the way the accent and the way we speak. Regards.

Toby, I am Mexican and I lived for a long, long time in Mexico City. Honestly, it’s one of the most interesting cities in the world. Your daughter will surely spend a very good time and great memories about it. However, even as Mexico City is safer than other places in the country, it’s by no means as safe as any other in the developed world (that’s on of the reasons I recently “exiled” myself in Europe). You must be careful, really. Should your need advise on daily-life recommendations, I’d be glad to help. Regards.
