Donald Trump has hinted that he would not help Britain if the Falkland Islands were invaded as the UK “was not there to help” him in Iran. The Telegraph has more.
The US President suggested he was minded to stay out of any future conflict if Argentina attempted to seize control of the territory.
Asked whether the US would “come to the aid” of the UK, Trump told GB News: “Your country was not there to help me.”
The President is believed to have been referring to Sir Keir Starmer’s refusal to join the US-Israeli attacks on Iran, a position that Andy Burnham has maintained as Prime Minister.
Trump’s remarks came after he suggested the US could end its long-held neutrality on the Falklands and support Argentina’s claim to the archipelago. The South American country has never legally owned the territory.
Javier Milei, the Argentine President, is set to make a televised address on Thursday evening on what he calls his country’s “sacred” claim to the islands.
In an interview with GB News, Trump was told Britons were worried about the Falklands. He was asked: “The US has always been neutral on this issue, but would you come to the aid of the UK?”
He replied: “Well, look, I was there when they had the first war. That was a long time ago and I watched it so carefully, and you comported yourselves very well. You took it back pretty strongly. But it’s a long way away, that’s a big trip, it’s a long way.
“So, your country’s not doing well. Don’t forget, you get a big percentage of your oil from the Strait of Hormuz and you weren’t there to help me.”
The ‘special relationship’ between Britain and the US has deteriorated significantly in recent months, following Britain’s refusal to join attacks on Iran. Sir Keir insisted at the time that the conflict was “not our war” – a position that has been echoed by Burnham.
The Prime Minister is expected to meet Trump for the first time this month, and is expected to take a more outspoken approach in his dealings with the White House.

Exactly how much help did Trump receive from Milei?
“Chickens coming home to roost” is one phrase that comes to mind. I seriously doubt we’d even try to repel Argentina if they chose to invade, with or without America’s help (which, incidentally, we didn’t have last time).
We don’t have the resources now that we had in the 80s, when even training for the forces we do have is being rationed to save money.
If we can’t stop rubber dinghies of unarmed invaders landing on the Channel coast on a daily basis, why on earth would we think we could repel a foreign army in the South Atlantic?
Our President is doing outstanding work for Americans. A few days ago the Dell’s donated billions to start savings accts for every child in the Uk. Private companies fell in line and offered to match donations. It is called the Trump acct. It is for kids. As a senior, I no longer pay tax on my social security. Medical prescriptions given favoured nation status and cost a fraction of what they did in the past. In other words they are affordable. The crime in major cities has dropped significantly. Sure no where is perfect, but be honest. What would you give if just one of your PM’s gave the working and tax paying population in britain a break?

Seriously, Heretic? This has got bugger all to do with religion and everything to do with money. The Sea Lion Field has the largest known reserves as yet untapped in the world, dwarfing the North Sea. The licence to explore is held by a company that is 65% Israeli (Navitas) and 35% British (Rock hopper). Our wonderful Government said that the oil could not be extracted because of their embargo. The Falkland Islands Government said sod off, it is our territory not yours and we will allow the extraction to go ahead. Quite honestly, if I were Israeli, I would be keeping Argentina on side, seeing as Westminster is not my friend in this money making opportunity. If I were the Falkland Islanders, with so much to gain, I would thank the UK for their friendship and support and honour the loss of life forty years ago, but point out Argentina is no longer a military dictatorship, but a democratic country and say unless the UK reverses it’s position on extraction, Argentina is potentially our better friend. Of course The Islanders are free to hold an Independence Referendum at any time, and since President Milei is a huge supporter of Israel, and has already converted to Judaism, and since Argentina constitutes a large chunk of the proposed New Promised Land called “Andinia”, which not only sits on a vast underground reservoir of freshwater, but also a vast offshore undersea reservoir of oil, as you pointed out, it seems likely that the Israeli company Navitas will just buy out the UK-based Rockhoppers, which has an Israeli on the Executive Board, and it will all work out just swimmingly for all concerned except the British People, as usual.
I, for one, do not want a single member of the British Armed Forces to be sent to die in Yet Another Foreign War. We need them all here at home to defend our own islands from the Third World Swarm.

Doesn’t the sovereignty over the islands still ultimately rest with the UK despite it being a self governing overseas territory?
