Kemi Badenoch has rejected former Conservative MPs as candidates for her party at the next election because they support Net Zero and the ECHR in a purge of those who make the Tories “look like Liberal Democrats”. The Telegraph has the story.
The Tory leader has refused to allow back former members, including MPs who lost their seats at the 2024 election, who disagree with her policy shift.
Under Badenoch, the Conservatives have rejected the target to achieve Net Zero by 2050 and pledged to leave the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), in order to better protect British borders.
Writing for the Telegraph, Badenoch says she is building a “party for the future”, not a “retirement home for failed politicians”.
The Telegraph understands that several former Conservative MPs have been rejected as candidates for the next election for refusing to align with her views on Net Zero and Britain’s membership of the ECHR.
Badenoch said her party would be ready if Andy Burnham called a snap election after taking office on July 20th, revealing she was vetting more than 2,000 Parliamentary hopefuls over the summer.
Burnham is on the brink of becoming the next Prime Minister after receiving 322 nominations from Labour MPs to be their next leader.
The Conservatives are neck and neck with Labour on about 20% of the vote, according to YouGov, with both parties trailing Reform UK by around four percentage points.
Badenoch says that some of her former colleagues “should never have been candidates before” and they will soon be informed they will not be allowed to stand again.
She writes: “If someone still believes in Net Zero targets that make energy more expensive and are destroying industry, they are not coming back.
“If someone thinks that the ECHR can be wished away rather than being dealt with properly, they are not serious.
“If they want to jump on every passing fad that makes us look more like Liberal Democrats than Conservatives, there is no place for them in this party. We have to show we have changed for the better.”

Scrapping net zero 2050 and leaving the ECHR is not enough. The Climate Change Act, Human Right Act, Equalities Act and Modern Slavery Act will have to be repealed. Is Badenough prepared to do this?

Does anyone k ow how many Tory MPs and candidates were MPs when Teresa May made the Net Zero targets law. We note none of them voted against it.
Were any of them MPs when the Climate Change Act was passed with only five in opposition, one of whom died in Dartmoor this day.

The current Tory schtick is not to abandon Net Zero, just not give it a name, do it more slowly – so the Plebs won’t notice.
ECHR – if the political will existed, illegal aliens and legal ones would be chucked out irrespective of the ECHR. Get rid of ECHR? Next excuse.

Leaving ECHR would not be enough because British Courts have assimilated its rules and values. we have to root out the Equalities Act and much more besides.
We have to legislate that past decisions based on ECHR, etc are not to be followed as precedent. All this has been developed by Reform but not, it seems, by the Tories.
Tories are trying to be the anger sink on all sorts of issues for which they have heavy responsibility in the way they acted over the EU. Memories are short: the Tories promised us the EEC was not moving to political union, sovereignty would be retained and the clever FCO would change the founding acts to suit us.
Tories made minor detailed criticisms of the EEC/EU near election time in order to con voters to support them. They did it over immigration. They must not get away with it again.

I’m from the camp that would never vote Conservative again following their last 14 years stint in power and the inexorable drift to the left following the 1997 election; however, if they can purge the dripping wets and the Net Zero cultists from the party and shift back to the Thatcherite thinking of the late 1970s and 1980s, I may have to swallow my pride and reassess.

The Civil Service would refuse to work with the Tories if they behaved in a remotely conservative fashion.
