EastEnders aired pro-migrant storylines after hiring a writer who campaigns for “migration and racial justice”. The Telegraph has the story.
Ade Lamuye has helped develop storylines for the BBC One soap opera since 2022, during which time it has run plots about an autistic Ghanaian who is repeatedly exploited and the racist murder of another African immigrant.
Lamuye, who is employed by BBC Studios, is also part of a project that aims to influence society, particularly attitudes to “migration and racial justice”. through pop culture.
This is the first evidence that narrative change campaigners with pro-migrant views are working within the UK’s national broadcaster.
It is understood that the BBC policies on conflicts of interest are included in its editorial guidelines, and action is taken in case of breaches.
Since early 2024, Lamuye has been on an advisory board responsible for the Power of Pop Fund, initiated by Comic Relief, which has directed almost £5 million to narrative change organisations seeking to use the media to reframe the debate on migration.
She has confirmed her role on the advisory board in her writing online, in which she has said that “entertainment and media holds influence and power to make real change”.
She has also acted as a facilitator for a migration messaging group called Media Movers, part of the charity Heard, which the Telegraph revealed this week had lobbied producers of a BBC children’s show to “impact the framing of migration”.
Heard has also received money from the Power of Pop fund.

My mother was a Cockney – family of 12 – so I had plenty of relatives in the East End.
When East Enders TV show came along it was as authentic East End as Dick Van Dyke’s Cockney accent in Mary Poppins, but not as entertaining.
I never watched it again after the first couple of episodes.
I may be completely wrong about this, because I’ve only ever met a few genuine Cockney Sparrows, but they all had strikingly intense light blue eyes that I’ve never seen on anyone else, so I wonder if any of your relatives had that beautiful characteristic as well, and if it’s a Cockney thing.
