The Problem With the Covid Inquiry’s Claim That the Vaccines “Saved 475,000 UK Lives”

The Covid Inquiry has claimed this week that the vaccines saved 475,000 UK lives. It's yet another fantasy from the modellers, says Dr Clare Craig. Look at the actual data and you see a very different picture.

7 min read

The Covid Inquiry’s Module 4 report, published this week, claims that 475,000 lives were saved by vaccination in England and Scotland. A further 7,000 are attributed to Wales. These figures are presented as findings. They are not findings. They are the outputs of a WHO model.

The inquiry itself has already identified this as a problem in a different context.

In its Module 2 report, Baroness Hallett found that scenarios were wrongly treated as forecasts, that ministers failed to grasp the distinction and that the reasonable worst-case scenario was what Professor Whitty called a “slippery concept”. The inquiry recommended multiple scenario planning precisely to guard against treating a single modelled worst case as a prediction.

In the same report’s executive summary, the inquiry stated that modelling had “established” that locking down one week earlier would have reduced deaths by 48% – approximately 23,000 fewer deaths. The Office for Statistics Regulation wrote to the inquiry, noting that this language risked being “a misleading representation of the underlying analysis”. The inquiry’s own secretary accepted that “established” was “too definitive” and did not reflect the uncertainty inherent in all modelling.

Module 4 does the same thing again, with a number 20 times larger.

What would have happened without the vaccine?

The 475,000 figure depends on assumptions about how many people would have died without vaccination. That, in turn, depends on how many people were susceptible in the first place. What would have happened without the vaccine? That is the key question to which I dedicate a chapter in my book, Spiked.

The model behind the inquiry estimate inherits the same foundational belief that drove the Imperial College projections: that the vast majority of the population was susceptible without interventions. From that starting point, Imperial produced the well-known estimate of up to 500,000 deaths in the UK in an unmitigated epidemic.

Once you assume that level of susceptibility, a large epidemic becomes inevitable. The model assumes that outcome then concludes it.

The question is whether that assumption was ever consistent with what we could observe. Very early on, we had two ways of testing it.

  1. The £37 billion test and trace programme produced data on the percentage of household contacts who later tested positive. This secondary attack rate was around 10% by PCR over the course of the whole wave, which works out at about 8.5% symptomatic and lateral flow test positive. That is a measure of the percentage who were susceptible in any one wave.
  2. PHE and UKHSA also carried out random testing of blood donor blood for antibodies. Around 6% developed antibodies at the end of each wave.

Both these measures were the same before and after the vaccinations in 2021. They did change with Omicron from January 2022 but that is not a vaccine effect.

Table 1: The proportion of household contacts that acquired infection from housemate for each variant i.e., susceptible population

If you begin with a population that is 10 times more susceptible than reality –  the 85% susceptible Imperial claim – everything that follows will be inflated by a similar margin.

Where is the signal?

If vaccination had prevented hundreds of thousands of deaths, you would expect to see it. Not in a model, but somewhere in the data. A change in their magnitude or duration of the waves that could not be explained by natural dynamics, or a low vaccination country that fared badly. There is nothing to see. The only observations from the US wastewater data (Figure 1) are:

  1. The first Omicron wave was rapid in onset and over quickly – but with a similar number affected as subsequent waves
  2. The low between waves never returns to baseline once vaccines are rolled out
  3. The waves are of similar magnitude and duration
Figure 1: Estimate of virus in USA wastewater March 2020-Sept 2024

The waves persisted throughout the ‘pandemic’ period – before vaccination, during rollout and after widespread vaccination. They did not disappear. They did not change in fundamental shape when examined using measures relatively robust to testing changes, such as hospital admissions or excess mortality. The pattern is one of continuity, not interruption.

The arithmetic

Even on the inquiry’s own terms, the numbers do not hold together.

The original modelled scenario projected up to 500,000 deaths in the UK without mitigation. Around 150,000 deaths were recorded as involving Covid. That leaves approximately 350,000 modelled deaths that did not occur, not 475,000.

Yet the inquiry now presents a figure of 475,000 lives saved in England and Scotland with 7,000 further in Wales – exceeding the number of deaths that were ever at risk even under the original, inflated assumptions.

Do not forget that the inquiry also claims that lockdowns “undoubtedly saved lives” so the cardboard cut-out lives claimed by the inquiry to have been saved are way higher even than this inflated figure.

Hypocrisy

The contradiction deserves to be stated plainly. The inquiry criticised ministers for treating worst-case modelling as forecast. It was rebuked by the UK’s statistics regulator for doing the same thing itself. And now, in Module 4, it has done it again – with an even larger number, presented with even less qualification.

Where modelling supported the conclusion that the government acted too slowly, the inquiry treated it as established truth and had to be corrected.

Where modelling supports the conclusion that vaccination saved hundreds of thousands of lives, it again treats it as established truth.

To understand the scale of what the claim is, here it is plotted along with Covid-attributed deaths. (Note that in every country that had had Covid mortality in 2020 and 2021, deaths accumulated more slowly from 2022 with the Omicron variant, complicating any attempt to credit the vaccine with the slowdown.)

Figure 2: The projected lives lost to Covid according to UK Covid Inquiry to enable a claim of 475,000 lives saved by vaccines in England and Scotland and a further 7,000 in Wales by March 2023.

People did die

It is also important to recognise that the excess death waves attributed to Covid and treated by the inquiry as entirely preventable by vaccination were, in reality, neither wholly attributable to Covid nor susceptible to being eliminated by vaccination.

The inquiry itself has heard extensive evidence on this. Its Module 3 report, published last month, found that blanket ‘Do Not Attempt CPR’ notices were imposed inappropriately on groups of people including those with learning disabilities and older people, often without the knowledge of the patient or their family. These notices led to denial of hospital care. It found that the public messaging “Stay Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives” contributed to a decline in emergency department attendances “even for life-threatening medical emergencies such as heart attacks”. It found that cancer screening programmes were paused, that missed and late diagnoses of colorectal cancer “resulted in loss of life and increased mortality rates”, and that some patients had their diagnoses and treatments delayed “to the point where their conditions became untreatable”. It found that many Covid patients “did not receive the care they would otherwise receive”. It found that at points healthcare systems came close to collapse, not because of the virus alone, but because they entered the pandemic already overstretched.

These are the inquiry’s own findings, from its own witnesses, published four weeks before Module 4. They describe a population in which people died not only from a virus but from the response to it – from policies that denied them treatment, from fear that kept them from seeking help.

On top of this, there was significant overdiagnosis. A striking 47% of people who die of any cause have a detectable respiratory virus in their nasopharynx — when the body is dying and the organs are failing, the immune system fails too. Swabbing the dying and the dead will inevitably produce positive results that have nothing to do with the cause of death. Only around 55% of deaths certified as Covid had any mention of acute respiratory infection on the death certificate, and in the winter 2020-21 wave that figure fell to just 38%. The overdiagnosed deaths do not simply inflate the Covid count — they hide excess deaths from other causes in the statistics, making it impossible to see the true scale of harm done by the response itself.

And yet the model behind the 475,000 figure treats the entire recorded Covid death toll as deaths caused by the virus – deaths that vaccination could, in principle, have prevented. It does not subtract the deaths caused by policies and fear of accessing healthcare.

Cardboard cut-out lives

What we are left with is a figure that represents only cardboard cut-out lives. Lives ‘saved’ that in truth were never at risk. Lives ‘saved’ that bear no relationship to reality.

An inquiry that has already been told by the statistics regulator that it overstated the certainty of modelled claims should not be building its most consequential conclusions on the same foundation.

The Establishment is NEVER going to admit that their response to the scamdemic was completely inappropriate and unnecessary.

It was all about swiftly advancing The Great Reset ….. and implementing a coercion, control and surveillance state.

Having sped read the report I am fuming. The previous modules showed a white wash, but this one goes one step further. No critical voices were heard, just the usual suspects marking their own homework as ‘safe and effective’. Whilst at the same time acknowledging that reporting of the non-safe events were poor. And that is an understatement!!!
How can anyone in their right mind call these products safe and at the same time acknowledging that the safety was not really monitored.
What is wrong with these people? Have they no shame?

Just confirms the stupidity of the whole clown show – how we’ve been lied to over and over again, pointlessly masked up and injected with a drug that likely cost more lives than it saved. Somewhere deep inside I knew this was just a lemming panic and managed to avoid the lot, safe in the knowledge that no one or no organisation will ever be held accountable

I can proudly boast that *not once* did I obey any covid law, and actually went out of my way to flout them.

To my dying day I will never understand how so many seemingly intellgent people were happy to turn off their BS detectors, or proved that they didn’t have one in the first place.

It appears that the latest report lauds the development of the AstraZeneca vaccine as a triumph of scientific prowess and speed. Maybe, but does it comment on the vaccine’s quiet withdrawal because of serious side effects? And if not, why not?

as for the contention that there was no known treatment for severe Covid, that is a lie. There was known treatment, flagged in late April 2020. The failure was in doctors not understanding what was causing severe illness and in government failing to listen to the right experts.

Another great article from Dr Craig! That said, until the folly that is virology gets challenged properly using the scientific method, morbidity and mortality will continue to be blamed on non-existent invisible pathogens.

Only one scientific discipline is given a free pass to circumvent logical principles, and it happens to be the one generating $billions. Every medical professional and scientist needs to call it out, or you’re part of the problem.

Not once has a pathogenic virus been demonstrated to exist in nature. That is why virology is a pseudo-science, and why its elaborate collection of cell cultures, electron microscopy, human and animal experiments, purported diagnostic tests and epidemiological data is nothing more than an elaborate subterfuge substituting presence for absence.

It is hard to know exactly what to call virology, but it is not science.

There is no concrete evidence that the ‘vaccine’ saved one single life. There is plenty of concrete evidence that the ‘vaccine’ caused thousands of deaths. The only unknown is how many deaths. And they are the actual facts.

Firstly) Nobody prevented any deaths. Deaths remain inevitable. So let us stop talking about prevention of deaths but call it postponement of deaths.

Secondly) the ban on travel etc was not linked to being vaccinated but to having proof of vaccination. It is thus sloppy statistics to label graphs with “vaccinated population” when they mean “population with certificate”. Why is it so difficult for them to use correct terminology? Or if they think that’s the same thing, then they are suggesting fake certificates also provided protection, so why didn’t they just save a ton of money and give everybody a fake certificate?

If memory serves, Dr Craig rightly prefers covid with a lower case c, like colds and flu, but here she reverts to Covid. Not sure why.

Well spotted. I think that must be an editorial decision along with the title. My version of the article is still lower case!

For clarity one should distinguish between SARS-CoV-2 infection and the illness caused by its provocation of a cytokine storm, Covid-19. Much confusion has been generated by a failure to do this.

There never was a “Sars2/Covid” virus. “Flu”/ILI’s apparently disappeared – only to apparently re-appear when Covid disappeared. Precisely how did that happen please?
The only thing engineered was a pandemic of fear.

There was quite a time where…

Cardiac Arrest and Covid = Death by Covid
Cancer and Covid = Death by Covid
Run over by bus and Covid = Death by Covid.

What are we to believe..?

Covid apparently caused a complete absence of flu deaths for the duration. So fighting Covid was pretty dumb from a flu prevention perspective.

Indeed. The WHO FluNet monitor showed flu abruptly disappearing to zero within one week in March 2020, namely the week of the global launch of Covid-19. IIRC some social media Karen, or Whitty, or WHO twonk arm-waved this away in terms of “extirpation”: that is, one lethal virus can miraculously elbow another one out of the way. Globally. Within a week. So Covid is a very effective treatment for influenza?
Isn’t there also still some sleight of hand regarding counting deaths from/with Covid in the two weeks or so immediately following vaccination? If true, this would unreasonably inflate the “efficacy” figure for the vaccine and diminish the “no intervention” figure.

Viral interference is definitely a genuine phenomenon. Although I do agree that the speed and extent to which influenza appears to have been displaced in this data does seem very curious.

But I also find it curious that, whilst people seem to have no problems in accepting that one variant of a virus can come to completely replace another, e.g. Omicron/Delta, some seem so dismissive of the idea that such evolutionary competition might also occur between different viruses.

The question I have is, knowing that they’ve completely made up a fact, and not just any fact but a completely outrageous one, why on earth would anyone believe any state produced statistic that cannot be verified in any way. Like inflation, or GDP or any claim for that matter.

You wouldn’t trust someone who you know lies to your face and refuses to admit it.

You know the rules for deciding inflation figures – the basket of things used for the figure – and GDP is calculated fro statistics, although it is often subject to revision when better data emerges. The jab saved lives figure is just a made up number.

Universal unbounded negatives are impossible to prove. My husband does not believe he would have succumbed to covid without the Pfizer treatment, but he certainly does believe he would not have suffered a carotid thrombosis if he had not had it. How is it possible the NHS is still dispensing this stuff?

Indeed – and what about the lives lost because alternative treatments and protocols were rejected or banned – protocols that we know they knew about because a doctor who writes here on DS told them?

Roy Everett

What about the lives not lost in the form of grocery workers in the first wave, who, supposedly against all the odds, showed no excess of cases compared to the general populace, despite each serving hundreds of plague-ridden customers every day? Their protocol, without masks or vaccinations, was “business as usual”. Similarly the input channel for the undertakers showed no discernible uptick; doubtless somebody would have karensplained this in terms of the ban on mourners at funerals.
Covid may have been an outbreak, conceivably an epidemic, but not a pandemic posing a global existential threat that required suspension of democracy, a ban on the publication of dissenting observations and an emergency tax grab of half a trillion pounds.

Farr’s Law (1840) predicts that epidemics wax and wane symmetrically. Once you are sufficiently far up the waxing phase of a new outbreak you can make a reasonable guess at the final case count (save for multiple waves). In the case of C20 and using Public Health England’s daily bulletins around 17th April 2000 a simple model based on Farr’s Law (made more specific by a normal/bell/standard distribution) predicted 100,000 *cases* in the UK. Merged with an observed case-fatality ration of at most 2% (mainly elderly or comorbid anyway) this gave an upper limit of 2,000 *deaths*, or about two per hospital. How 2000 got inflated to an entire Hyde Park-sized Mortuary during April 2020, along with the idea that the NHS would be overwhelmed, is a mystery known mainly to some workers in SW1 and SW7, along with the MSM news editors, notably The Guardian and the BBC, and perhaps the TikTok dancer and Nightingale Hospital administrators. Hallett and Starmer will try to ensure that the mystery persists. Whitehall cover-ups triumph again!
