Every adult in Britain will be forced to have a Government-issued digital ID card under “dystopian” proposals designed to tackle illegal immigration set to be announced by Sir Keir Starmer. The Mail has more.
The idea of a mandatory identification system has long been advocated by Labour as a way to tackle illegal migration.
But it is fiercely opposed by civil rights campaigners, who say it risks turning everyday life into a “dystopian nightmare”.
Detailed plans for what has been dubbed a ‘Brit card’ could be announced by the Prime Minister as early as tomorrow before being subject to consultation.
Under the proposals, anyone starting a new job or renting a property would be required to show their digital ID so it can be checked against a central database.
Currently, employees have the option of showing a number of different forms of digital ID, but there are fears these are too early to fake.
France has repeatedly claimed that the lack of ID cards in the UK acts as a pull factor for Channel migrants, who are able to find work in the black economy.
Earlier this month, the PM said that digital IDs could “play an important part” in making Britain less attractive to illegal migrants.
However critics of the scheme warned it could turn the country into a “dystopian nightmare” if people are forced into ID checks “to go about our everyday lives”.
Rebecca Vincent, of Big Brother Watch, said: “While Downing Street is scrambling to be seen as doing something about illegal immigration, we are sleepwalking into a dystopian nightmare where the entire population will be forced through myriad digital checkpoints to go about our everyday lives.
“Mandatory digital ID… will not stop small boat crossings, but it will create a burden on the already law-abiding population to prove our right to be here.
“It will turn Britain into a ‘Papers, please’ society.” …
Conservative Justice Spokesman Robert Jenrick also criticised the proposal earlier this month. He said: “Most employers who are employing individuals illegally are doing so knowingly.
“Asking them to check ID cards rather than the current checks that they are already obliged to do is not going to make a blind bit of difference to illegal migration.”

China’s system requires everyone to have a digital ID, called your “Health Pass” held on your phone, without which you are unable to act freely in society. Upset the regime and your Health pass changes from green to amber or red, when you are TRULY trapped.

What with this and smart meters/cars etc., there isn’t a thing we’re doing that they won’t know about. Someone made the comment in The Times that you have ‘nothing to fear if you’ve done nothing wrong’, such naivety. There would need to be some law in place restricting the use of IDs so that they can’t just be a free for all for everyday activities to have a ‘papers please’ condition of use (as the covid vaccine card became) but I’m not holding my breath.
I think we’re seeing a gradual change from the time-honoured principle of “innocent until proven guilty” to the other way round. To take one example: it’s incredible the number of hoops you have to jump through now when buying a property or taking out an investment product, to prove you’re not money-laundering.
It’s all very well saying “nothing to fear if you’ve done nothing wrong”, as long as it applies to criminal actions. But when criminal law expands to speech and thought, then we all have something to fear from those in authority who dislike our opinions and beliefs.

Unless they have been working on this secretly for some years it will probably take 10 years to implement and cost mega pounds and have cost over-runs etc. During that time the crossings on the boats continue unabated.
There were reports a week ago that the trafficking gangs are seeing increasing demand for their services and the will soon be using larger boats to ferry migrants to the UK.
The ‘progressive agenda’ is that we are going to hell with more rapes, more murders, stabbings, robberies, gang warfare etc. but that can all be ignored because the agenda says it will solve the problem by the introduction of Digital ID.
Leaving aside all the weighty political and moral arguments against this idea, I doubt our government and civil service actually have the ability to implement it. There are so many practical questions to answer, such as:

The farmer tags his cattle to keep an eye on his livestock, not the wildlife.
The UK already has national IT systems that could serve as an ID system. One such is the National Insurance Number system which could be relatively cheaply and easily adapted for every-day ID purposes. However, this system is not readily adaptable for linking to individuals’ bank accounts, a programmable digital currency, details of one’s purchases, etc., etc., which is why it would not meet Starmer’s ‘total control’ objectives. The country needs to wake up to what the real aims are.
This Starmer-led government is not a Labour government. It is a Fabian Society government pursuing all the globalist, ‘Brave New World’, dystopian, total population control objectives espoused by that Society—similar to those of the WEF and, more recently, and aggressively, the UN via its agency the WHO.

The French argument for ID is laughable …work in the black is rife amongst ordinary French self-employed folk, and I’m sure illegals are used regularly too there. However, I do agree that there are far too many other “pull factors” that make it inevitable that illegals will continue to arrive on our shores without further action from our hopeless government.
As for landlords having to check ID!! Ha ha. Anybody been to a certain part of Peterborough where shacks are put up in back yards for illegals to live in. I’m sure it is a rather common phenomenon in certain parts of the UK.

Digital ID has the potential to curtail my freedoms and determine what I can and cannot do. It can be hacked. And it does not work when internet or power fails.

If you rent or buy a property or apply for a job in the legal job market you already have to prove your identity: passport, driving licence,, P45, NI number etc. In the case of property renting you also need to prove your financial status, i.e a bank reference or provide a guarantor who is a house owner or has a record of long term renting themselves. Adding a digital ID will make absolutely no difference whatsoever. No, it’s all about control as usual. Move on a generation or less and you will have to carry a digital ID to use your digital currency card for any transaction (probably the same card by then if you haven’t already been micro-chiped ) so the authorities will be able to control your shopping basket, and know exactly where you are and what you are doing at any time. I am not as terrified at having an ID card, but I am a bit angry for two reasons, three if you count the fact that Tony Blair is the driving force behind it. Not a religious man but if Tony Blair turned out to be the Antichrist, it wouldn’t really surprise me. I think he is genuinely an evil person, and as for his missus, Cruella DeVille made real, don’t get me started.
The principle reason we are to be ear tagged like cattle is the reduce or control immigration, a motivation that does not survive the barest scrutiny. The illegals have already destroyed their ID and ditched their phones on the French side of the channel. The shiny new card with a shiny new identity solves nothing.
Simply fingerprinting, photographing and taking DNA would make them just as easy to identify when committing crimes. Something that should have happened on Blair’s watch. We already take that biometric ID from people arrested for traffic offences, why not illegal entry?

Rapists will be required to produce the id card before embarking on their activities, mobile phones will no longer be snatched from your hand unless the thief produces his card. All criminal activity will cease at a stroke.

Apparently it’s all going to be based on our mobile phone, so how will my 90 year old parents who have never owned a phone or computer going to get along. If mobile phone based, do well imagine one migrant won’t lend history phone to another to get work or a rental property? Bunch of prats
The main issue is not a digital ID card, but the scheme behind it. All government databases will be cross-referenced to produce a single ID for each person. At the moment we can provide various bits of paper to show we’re who we assert we are, but in future if they don’t all lead back to a single ID we’ll be cooked.
It’s nothing to do with having to carry a card and everything to do with control of what we’re allowed to do. Want to buy cigarettes?; add that to your health record.
The widely hated and pilloried Data Protection Act specifically prevented cross-referencing personal information for purposes other than what it was gathered for. Now that’s inconvenient for government well ‘of course, it doesn’t apply to us’.
A single ID database will be more efficient for government and convenient for most subjects but can we trust future governments to be benign? Personally, I don’t trust that our current government is benign.
The new Afghan government (Taliban) inherited the payroll database from the occupying coalition. That went well, didn’t it?
