At 58:44 in the Weekly Skeptic, in response to the outrageous Wokery from Archdeacon Miranda Threlfall-Holmes, Toby Young repeats a theory which he says others such as Peter Thiel, John Gray have suggested. Namely that the rise of Wokery in the west is not in fact due to the decline of Christianity, leaving a god shaped hole for wokery to fill, but is instead due to the decline of what are called “classical values” which are alleged to have previously stood alongside Christianity keeping its worst excesses in check or balance. With the classical values washed away this so called Christianity is now given its full vent to become its full Wokish self, which was supposedly apparent from its initiation.
This opinion displays such monumental ignorance of Scripture, the ground for Christian values and doctrine (in contrast to mere religious tradition) that it is effectively defamatory.
But to make this claim Toby needs to show that the Classical values he highlights are not also Christian ones. He muttered stuff about nation building and courage etc .. well here are some starters for you Toby
Basically the good classical values are also Christian values. Christianity claims to fulfil all that is genuinely good.
Values are valued because they get you somewhere, but if you are already in power you don’t actually have to bother too much because you are already there. The rise of Wokery is therefore in part due to the laziness of both the church and the Classical value atheists, neither could be bothered to actually ground out or base their values, because they did not need to – they were already in power. They could just say it’s because we say so. On questioning their answers are patronising ignorant rubbish and they eventually lose trust and power.
The power of Wokery is the basic simplicity of its core value. It does not try to create some grand vision of man, at its root it just says suffering and oppression is bad – and who is going to argue against that. Well actually that is what robust Christianity and proper Classical value atheists must join together to do, for in the end our greatest fear should not be of suffering and dying, but instead of not living properly – because then by definition we would be suffering. The Wokists have their eye on the wrong target and so will just make a muddle of everything and make things worse. To live in a world of randomness, and differential life choice selection, is also going to entail some hard discipline and practice (suffering) and then also differential outcomes (which some lazy people call oppression or privilege) – but that is part of the glory of it!
