South East Asian countries are experiencing their deadliest Covid waves to date despite the milder Omicron variant being dominant and high vaccination rates.
Here are the double-vaccination rates in South Korea, Japan, Singapore, Thailand and Hong Kong, plus New Zealand, with the U.K. included for comparison.
The graphs below show record highs of reported infections in each of these countries, particularly in South Korea, Singapore, Hong Kong and New Zealand. They also show record levels of Covid deaths in South Korea, Japan and Hong Kong, though not yet in Thailand and Singapore. New Zealand has hit record deaths, though at a low level so far. Japan’s and Singapore’s curves (infections and deaths) appear to have peaked, whereas South Korea, Hong Kong and New Zealand are still on the way up. Thailand’s reported infections appear to have peaked but not yet deaths.
Up-to-date excess mortality data are not available for these countries yet so we can’t see what impact the Covid deaths are having on overall deaths. In many European countries the impact has been very low, making Omicron largely a phantom Covid wave, though quadruple-jabbed Israel has proven the curious exception.
In mainland China, which is still reportedly aiming for Zero Covid and putting cities of millions under lockdown, daily reported infections on Monday reached their highest level since the original Hubei outbreak, albeit with only 526 reported. However, these reflect outbreaks emerging in dozens of cities including Shanghai, the northern port city of Qingdao and the southern city of Dongguan. Will China (whose Covid data, we should note, have not been deemed trustworthy by many observers) finally have full scale outbreaks as seen across most of the globe over the past two years?
Why South East Asia had largely escaped the worst of the pandemic until Omicron (Singapore and Thailand had moderate Delta waves) has been something of a mystery. Early claims that they were aces at Test and Trace didn’t really stack up as the reason for their success (though led many countries to believe such a containment strategy should be achievable), as while South Korea’s efforts were heroic Japan’s were ordinary and there was no real difference in outcomes. Are there genetic, physiological or cultural reasons for the differences across world regions?
There are many unanswered questions in the pandemic. But that many countries would be having their deadliest waves after double and triple vaccinating their populations, and with what is supposed to be the mildest variant so far, was, I imagine, not part of anyone’s plan.

At the beginning of the pandemic,South East Asian countries were heralded as exemplars for their success with test and trace and ability to quickly isolate individuals resulting (apparently) in much lower infection rates. But we also know that a repression strategy can only “flatten the curve” i.e. delay the spread of the virus, so the number of deaths would end up being about the same. As for the vaccines, most of the deaths continue to be among those who are above normal life expectancy. A more accurate measure is needed. How about measuring and analysing post mortem deaths only both before and during the pandemic? After over two years an attempt should be made to look at the detail instead of all this superficial top level number crunching..
The infection to death period is very short in many of these countries. Could it be that catching Covid-19 is so unacceptable that people are not admitting to the health authorities that they are unwell until they are at death’s door?
It is possible that Omicron is no less deadly than all the other variants. In the UK and Europe Covid has already taken the most succeptible and Omicron is infecting the healthy more (both of which will reduce the death rate); in addition, these countries have got better at early treatment and care for the vulnerable.
Just a quick geography lesson. I live in Indonesia, which IS in SE Asia. But Hong Kong, S. Korea, Japan and New Zeaaland are NOT!!

I live in Thailand and prior to the jabs roll-out the number of total deaths or 2020 was less than the daily death toll on the roads. Then came the jabs and the death rate rose rapidly.
I think that one reason for the low death toll was the very poor living conditions of those on the basic wage. (I am ytrying to be kind here about the living conditions)
Therefore as I see it these people must have tremendous immune systems. Also when you meet someone of any age you bow your head whilst putting your hands together to say hello hence aerosol transmission is reduced, Add in to that the heat and the sunshine(vitamin d) you can see why the infection rate was low. Then came the jabs.
Up until the jabs roll-out I didn’t personally know anyone who had the convid but since then there have been many – all of whom have been jabbed.

Yes, Omicron, which has arrived in South East Asia belatedly, is having its fling after displacing Delta and other previous variants. But I would take the cases and deaths numbers with a big pinch of salt, for all the reasons which will be well known to your readers.
Thailand, where I live, was let off relatively lightly with previous “waves”, with COVID-attributed daily deaths peaking at 312 last August (out of a population of 70 million). Omicron has set a new high, but cases have been dropping recently and the death rate – 65 at the last count – can reasonably be expected to follow suit, allowing for the usual time-lag.
So only really a “deadly” surge if you are a msm splash sub mindful of the need to keep your Big Pharma and Big Government sponsors sweet!

People in South-East Asia have ALWAYS worn masks – this is to counter the air pollution from burning fields and and the never serviced motorbikes, cars, trucks and buses. N95 masks are the best for this

These countries are near the equator allowing their populations to accrue higher amounts of vitamin D. One possible reason why they don’t experience a large flu/covid season.

The key question to answer is what are the differences between omicron and other variants?
Could there be a genetic disposition towards more serious illness caused by omicron in those populations?
Certainly they are more susceptible to influenza than Caucasian populations.
My fear has always been that the effects of the fake vaccine would be diagnosed as covid, and so perpetuating this engineered madness.

We have had C-19 in our house for the pst week – 4 residents, Dad, wife, kid and me.
Only the former is jabbed – 2 shots, last one last May.
He is well into his 80s, but generally very healthy, I was seriously worried for about 36hrs, I was seriously worried about his condition, but he fought it off.
The rest of us caught it from him – we are unjabbed. Our symptoms have varied between a moderate cold and moderate flu.
We have all all been over-dosing on zinc, vit-D, vit-C and honey & lemon drinks, with the odd paracetamol.

Dad has done well despite the health anchor of being double jabbed. There is a nearly 100% chance omicold wont kill you without serious comorbidities. And then its not really the omicold that has killed you.
Out of interest are you sure you have had actual flu to compare against. I had it when 19 and i didnt get out of bed for 4 days with horrendous fevers, barely ate for a week and took about 3 weeks to feel better. Once youve had it, it completely resets what you thought ‘flu’ was.

Our family, all unjabbed, countless friends (ex-friends) & extended family have all had one or 2 bouts of illness that tested positive. I can detect no variance at all between the levels of severity between the jabbed & unjabbed. Oddly, the unjabbed keep saying things like “thank God I’m jabbed, who knows how bad it would have been if I wasn’t”.
