Opposition to domestic vaccine passports appears to be growing in the Commons. More than 70 MPs – from differing political parties – have voiced their concern over the introduction of “discriminatory” Covid IDs. Katy Balls in the Spectator has the story.
As Boris Johnson prepares to deliver an update on Monday on Government plans for immunity passports and international travel, the Prime Minister is already facing a parliamentary backlash. More than 70 MPs have voiced their concern over the use of “divisive and discriminatory” immunity IDs in England. The cross-party group opposing ranges from Iain Duncan Smith and Steve Baker to Jeremy Corbyn and Diane Abbott.
While the Government insists no final decision has been taken, the expectation in Government is that immunity IDs are coming. MPs on the various “listening exercises” Michael Gove has hosted this week, came away thinking immunity passports are a done deal – no matter what they make of them. There’s also a sense that they could underpin any easing. MPs interested in the social distancing review are being directed to the immunity certificate review. This suggests ministers view the way to ending social distancing as showing one’s Covid status.
The cross-party group of politicians has signed a pledge not to support the introduction of domestic Covid passports. Sky News has more details on the pledge’s signatories.
The signatories to the pledge include leading Tory Covid rebels such as Mark Harper and Steve Baker, who run the Covid Recovery Group (CRG) of Conservative MPs, ex-Tory leader Sir Iain Duncan Smith and former cabinet ministers Esther McVey, Andrew Mitchell and Sir John Redwood.
Another of the Conservative signatories, Sir Graham Brady, who chairs the influential 1922 Committee of Tory backbenchers, said: “Covid-status certification would be divisive and discriminatory.
“With high levels of vaccination protecting the vulnerable and making transmission less likely, we should aim to return to normal life, not to put permanent restrictions in place.”
A 20-strong group of Labour MPs has signed the pledge, including former shadow home secretary Diane Abbott and ex-shadow chancellor John McDonnell.
Labour peer Baroness Shami Chakrabarti and ex-Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who now sits as an independent MP, have also joined the campaign.
“International travel is a luxury but participating in your own community is a fundamental right,” said Baroness Chakrabarti, who used to run civil liberties and human rights group Liberty.
“So internal Covid passports are an authoritarian step too far.”
Almost all Liberal Democrat MPs have signed the pledge, with their party leader Sir Ed Davey having this week branded the use of Covid passports within the UK as “illiberal” and “unworkable”.
“As we start to get this virus properly under control we should start getting our freedoms back, vaccine passports – essentially Covid ID cards – take us in the other direction,” he said.

When the government claims “we have no plans” its a dead cert they are already in place. One thing we can rely on is the government has continually lied to us.

70 MPs will be considered little more than an irritation, just a fly that’s easily wafted away.
This is the natural conclusion of the vax roll-out. If you supported the vaccine roll-out then by default you supported this. Vaccinating a whole population against a disease that is survivable for 99.8 % of those unlucky enough to get it never made sense. The Diamond Princess showed that even in a captive ideal demographic no more than 20% became infected.
Piggybacking a digital ID scheme on to the back of this roll-out with the ability to control who goes where, when and whenever makes a lot of sense for a govt bent on controlling a populous unfamiliar to such things.
The framework for all this is being built now while the distraction of whether it will happen is just that. Tesco’s and even the local garden centre installed a traffic light system last year at no small expense able to read and detect using facial recognition technology – a garden centre! It detected I was not wearing a mask and flashed up ‘RED’.
That illustrated just the kind of thinking that was taking place.

The trouble is there’s always this relatively small number of MPs who are willing to show a bit of backbone, while the rest continue to comply.
There should have been much more resistance from the get-go. They’ve allowed Johnson to ride roughshod over all our civil liberties and now he’s built up such a head of steam he’s going to be difficult to stop.
The 70 rebels I feel sure are just a token gesture to show the public that at least some of them have a backbone when in reality …….. they dont.

The comments made in posts essentially confirm that the decisions made by the politicians resulted in obvious curtailment of liberty and are being ignored by otherwise sensible individuals who have been persuaded that the risk of dying is infinitely more important than the ability to live. What has not been challenged publicly is the factual basis on which the decision are made. Public Health and epidemiologist construct guesses which are then presented by politicians as inevitability. New variants are now the current medical paranoia in the press, but the evidence is that this the vaccines will curtail severe disease caused by them.

What is so terribly sad in the pandemic is not just the deaths and the rise of autocracy but the death of the scientific method. Associative data being confused with causative conclusions and epidemiology advice supplanting human need.
Very interesting that Mike Yeadon told James Delingpole that all the establishment and their wealthy friends were still flying around the world on holiday and business.
Once again they are determined to ruin the middle classes and return the working class to serfdom.
Someone other than James should be highlighting the fact that the laws being made are benefitting those with enough money to join the billionaires once the SMEs have been absorbed into their orbit.
Someone should also be highlighting that most MPs are quite thick and do not understand how the private sector uniquely works in this country.
It was no wonder people were warned very strongly to stay clear of airports, obviously someone in government or rich celebrity being clocked at an airport would scupper some of their best laid plans.

This has been the goal all along. It will allow the govts/international agencies and global corps to control most aspects of life directly.

There is a fundamental legal issue here. It is explicitly stated when all the government bodies around the world gave emergency use for all the vaccines that they specifically did not confer immunity nor stopped transmission. And that granting emergency use did not mean the vaccines had been passed for general use.
It is actually illegal, not just misleading to use the photo introducing this article. No ‘passport’ etc can suggest that vaccines give immunity. Vaccine passports can confer no greater worth than the legal intention of the emergency use agreement. Legally they cannot be used discriminatorily, ie for means of controlling access etc. This applies as much to borders as to internal use.
Why does not an MP, the leader of the opposition for instance, demand the House receives the legal opinion of the Solicitor General.
Correct me if I am wrong, but if the Solicitor General is a member of the tory government and appointed by one Boris Johnson, what position do you think he is going to adopt???
Acting contrary to the law doesn’t seem to mean anything to BJ and cohorts – the law only applies to us ordinary citizens – as the last 12 months have demonstrated.
Well, you know what to do. Ignore it and go about your business as a free Briton. Johnson is a coward and a bully. He will back down, as will Hancock, Gove et al. Just show some courage folks. It is time to stand up and honour our ancestors – by acting with fortitude and resilience.

Bit difficult if they bring in these domestic passports and we are banned from doing anything or going anywhere. Which is why it is so vital to fight every step of the way.

Worrying, but I suspect the threat of passports is solely intended to drive sufficient hesitants to vaccine centres. If that’s not achieved we’d likely never hear about them again ( no government is stupid enough to discriminate against half the population) but in the meantime they have to maintain that they’re coming.
“Hesitancy” is a euphemism in many cases for abject refusal. The government seriously underestimate the resistance to being jabbed with Big Pharma’s mysterious and relatively untested concoction.
Hesitancy will RISE with the threat of these passports, if you’re going to go about your future life constantly harassed by “your papers please” you might as well refuse vaccination and defy all the future diktats rather than comply with vaccination and still have the same indignity if being tracked and Id’d everywhere.
Do you really think so? I think the opposite based on what I have observed, seen and read since Lockdown 1 was implemented. People will not think too deeply about this or the huge implications of such things, but shrug their shoulders and go along with it – either because they believe the propaganda, or because they can’t be arsed to resist.
Think about what the app’ really means. You can catch Covid and pass it on. You can be identified instantly. Government will know exactly where you are and what you do. Companies will know who you are and where you go. The next step is official ID cards.
There was a German once, I forget his name, he said the biggest problem for the West was that they never learnt how Hitler took control. He assumed power on the pretext of protecting people. He then brought in a compulsory ID system. This should sound eerily familiar. Nothing ever really changes, history repeats itself.
Hitler took control by manipulating the system but by and large did so legally. The German people were given a plebiscite to see if they agreed. The result is not encouraging.

The ignored elephant in the room is the seriously big one with “Covid Passports mean nothing at all” on its side. Why does nobody seem to understand this basic truth? All a Covid Passport, certificate or whatever means is that you had a jab. It does not mean you are immune. it does not mean you cannot pass it on. It is less meaningful than your MOT certificate which serves no real purpose the second you leave the garage.

Their end game is turn us all into obedient, herd following, good little communitarian citizens, becoming attendees at regular “citizen assemblies” to keep us on the straight and narrow. Bit hard when you want to ban those who exercise the right to choose not to have the vaccine, from actually being able to participate in society anymore! What next? FORCED vaccination, being held down, or held in a “facility” somewhere? Or quietly gotten rid of – can’t have heretics in the mix! I would sooner actually be held down and forcibly jabbed than go through life presenting a pass. I strongly oppose genunely mandatory vaccinations (forcible jabbing or a one-off-fine), but I oppose daily ID pass showing even mroe strongly. The ID-card-by-stealth and -total-state-control-of-all-daily-activities and subtly-making-vaccines-mandatory-bu-psychological-torture which passes present is even more dangerous than forced medical procedures, because it goes on forever! I refuse to comply, and I am therefore refusing a vaccine which a while back I would have been willing to take.
