The Rise of the ‘Stunt Protest’

The claim, repeated by Dominic Cummings to MPs yesterday, that without a lockdown in March 2020 "the NHS is going to be smashed in weeks" is demonstrably false. Infections were declining even as the words were spoken.
Judging from the bombs Dominic Cummings is going to drop – and which he's leaked to the Daily Mail – Boris is a 64 carat lockdown sceptic. If only he'd stuck to his guns.
Today we're publishing an excerpt from Laura Dodsworth's new book, A State of Fear: how the UK government weaponised fear during the COVID-19 pandemic. In it, Laura asks: Why was Boris's March 23rd 20202 speech so odd?

Boris Johnson confirmed today that "nothing" is ruled out in responding to the Indian variant including new lockdowns. But does the data show that the variant is anything for us to worry about?
Boris Johnson recently said there was a “very good chance” all Covid restrictions would come to an end on June 21st, yet mask-wearing and caps on numbers at large events could stay in place beyond the “end” of lockdown.
"Boris does seem to need the approval of his peers in Whitehall and is a great appeaser," says Dr Timothy Bradshaw. "He caves in everywhere, at the expense of ordinary people on behalf of massive corporations."
If the Government still has confidence in the vaccines then it needs to act like it. If it doesn't then it needs to be upfront about this so a proper debate can be had about what that means for the future.
Boris said the lockdown has been "overwhelmingly important". But several places have seen numbers decline absent a lockdown, and evidence suggests the infection peak in UK occurred before our three lockdowns were imposed.
Has Boris lost his faith in the vaccines? That's certainly the impression you'd get from what he has said this morning. But he is wrong to claim that infections have fallen mainly because of the lockdown.
