Jacinda Arden has finally given up on her bonkers Zero Covid policy. From today, New Zealanders will be able to return to their country. Some have been stranded overseas for more than a year.
After two years of borders shut tight in support of a doomed Zero Covid goal, Australia is to welcome vaccinated tourists again by March, with the Government set to announce a reopening date as early as Monday.
Shutting the borders in January would have bought us time, but it might have simply postponed the epidemic until the winter. Cummings is therefore wrong to suggest that it was "obviously" the right thing to do.
Lockdowns do not explain why Denmark, Norway and Finland have had fewer deaths than Sweden. Border controls were the crucial factor during the first wave. And Sweden had more restrictions than Finland during the second.
