In this week’s Spectator, I’ve wrestled with the question of whether the Metropolitan Police should have arrested Tommy Robinson at Sunday’s March Against Antisemitism. Here’s an extract:
My gut says it was an abuse of police powers. Section 35 of the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 empowers the police to order someone to leave an area if they have reasonable grounds to suspect that the behaviour of the person has contributed to, or is likely to contribute to, people in the locality feeling harassed, alarmed or distressed. The organisers of Sunday’s march – the Campaign Against Antisemitism – had made it clear in advance that Robinson wasn’t welcome, so it’s safe to assume that they at any rate felt alarmed when he showed up. The police say they only arrested him after he repeatedly refused to go quietly, and failing to comply with a s.35 dispersal request is an offence.
But do the organisers of a public protest have a right to stipulate in advance who cannot attend and expect the police to remove them if they do? Section 36 of the same Act says that when deciding whether to issue such a directive, the police must have ‘particular regard to the rights of freedom of expression and freedom of assembly’ as set out in Articles 10 and 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights. What if the organisers had said they didn’t want the journalist Yasmin Alibhai-Brown there because she once described Israel as ‘more wicked and dangerous than Hamas’? I doubt the police would have arrested her. Indeed, the heavy-handed treatment of Robinson, who’s a supporter of Israel, in contrast to the lenience shown by the Met towards those on the other side, gives an impression of double standards.
To add to the case for the defence, Robinson maintains he was there in his capacity as a journalist for a news publishing site called Urban Scoop and was carrying out a paid assignment. Section 36 says a constable may not give a direction under s.35 if the person is ‘required to attend for the purposes of the person’s employment, or a contract of services to which the person is a party’.
I go on to make the case for the prosecution, but conclude the Met should have shown him the same latitude they extend to the more outspoken pro-Palestinian protestors. The police’s heavy handed treatment of Robinson, while turning a blind eye to extremists much more likely to cause harassment, alarm and distress every Saturday in London, contributes to the impression of double standards.

David Davis has argued the Government will make a “fundamental mistake” if it goes ahead with plans to let the police search properties without a court warrant.

Given the extent that TPTB have scammed and gaslighted us all over the last few years; when I see EV articles here like;

I do find myself wondering as to what is the real agenda here? I have looked at EVs and concluded that whilst I would be OK with having one as a company car or to borrow one from a community car club I would not want to own one. My conclusion is that they are more of a liability than an asset and that personal ownership of an EV would be a bad idea. It seems I am not alone in that thinking as these articles suggest that many EVs are run on a corporate/lease basis.
And so whilst we have article after article despairing that people are not buying EVs on a personal ownership basis, I cannot help but wonder if this was not the idea all along? The Covid lock-downs got the idea across that we can live without travelling and got us ready for the idea of the demise of the personal privately owned car and all the travel freedom such a car can provide.
The above articles hint that the current policies linked with the lack of personal purchases of EVs will see a major contraction in the motor industry, again, is this by accident or design? The motor industry has been a cornerstone of western economies, its demise will see a major change in the economy. Leisure, camping, caravanning and tourism will be greatly hit as many of us will be confined to our 15 minute cities.
For many of us the big question will be; will they let us continue to run our old ICE cars for as long as we can keep them running or will there be restrictions on fuel supplies and ever tighter MOT tests that will force our old ICE cars off the road?
One thing that is for sure is that this whole EV issue is yet another example of gaslighting, propaganda and manipulation that has become such a hall mark of our world in recent years.

Germany, Austria and Italy are planning to do the same sort of thing. Austria wants also to use Rwanda while Italy has signed a deal to send them to Albania. Maybe the assorted nationalities going to Albania can replace some of the tradesmen who have come to the UK?

For me, the total downfall of the Met was signified when Dick, rather than being prosecuted for the unnecessary murder in public of an innocent Brazilian lad, shot on the floor of a tube carriage before the horrified witnesses, was made chief of the Met.
