Piddington, a village in Oxfordshire, has voted to leave the UK by 91.6% to 8.4% on a turnout of 92%, in a symbolic referendum called in response to plans to house 1,200 migrants in a converted army camp nearby. The Telegraph has more.
Residents of Piddington voted 285 to 26 to “secede from the UK and pursue self-determination” after the Government announced plans to convert a former army garrison into a camp for 1,256 male asylum seekers.
The result was declared by Susannah Parden, a parish councillor, just after 7am on Wednesday, based on a turnout of nearly 92%.
The referendum carried no legal or constitutional weight, but villagers wanted to register their concerns about the threat the camp represented to their way of life.
Residents have said the male migrants would outnumber villagers by nearly four to one and increase the risk of crime.
Tim McNally, the Chairman of Piddington parish council, said the vote – held on the anniversary of the 1940 Battle of Britain – was a “battle for Britain” and an example of “democracy in operation”.
He said: “It is a message to the Government that you are going to have to change. You are going to have to grow into our way of thinking.”
He admitted the vote had no legal standing but added: “We are the village formerly known as Piddington. Today we are to be known as the Principality of Piddington, and we will be putting up a sign to that effect.”
Andy Burnham said he understood the “strength of feeling” about migration in the wake of the Piddington result.
The Prime Minister said: “This involves difficult, difficult decisions. It’s about fairness across across the country. I’m not saying that only one part of the country or one group of communities should do all of the work.
“It’s difficult, and obviously I will look at the issues being raised by the community and in the referendum, but we have to ensure that we have a fair plan, as well as getting the numbers down.”
McNally said the village would move on to the next phase of its campaign and could become a catalyst for similar referendums around the country.
The parish has been approached by 500 town and village councillors and residents for advice on replicating the campaign, which was backed by the Conservatives, Reform UK and the Liberal Democrats.

Tom Harris points out that the local MP, Lib Dem Calum Miller, when still a councillor in 2023 supported a motion to make Oxfordshire “a place of sanctuary for those fleeing torture and death”. Funny how such virtue-signalling doesn’t go down well once “those fleeing torture and death” turn up en masse on people’s doorsteps.

In the true election, Piddington people voted LibDems. Not only did they happily watch the invasion of the rest of the country, but also enthusiastically supported it. Suddenly, when the jihadi platoons hit their front garden, they turned into “Far Right”. This is an opportunity to get rid of their duplicitous party by stationing all the dinghy people in their constituencies.
“Those fleeing torture and death” should be corrected to “Liars pretending to flee torture and death”
Oxfordshire can be “a place of sanctuary for those fleeing torture and death” – it sounds quite noble. So that’s 13 of them according to a whistleblower. Send the rest home.

But, in case there was any doubt, we all love.in a protection racket with no power to opt out.
Fairness across the country would be sending them all back. The country has voted on multiple occasions to reverse the invasion by reducing the levels of immigration and successive governments have done the reverse. We are inching inexorably towards a confrontation.
If by confrontation you mean some riot that the atate crushes mercilessly and with ease, then maybe.
If you mean anything more than that, I doubt it.
