Speaking from the podium outside the door of Number 10 at 5.30pm, the Prime Minister said there has been a “shocking increase in extremist disruption and criminality” and added that “now our democracy itself is a target”. Sky News has more.
He also described the Rochdale by-election result on Thursday night as “beyond alarming”, and claimed “our streets have been hijacked by small groups who are hostile to our values”.
His speech came after the victory of maverick politician George Galloway in the Greater Manchester seat, following a campaign dominated by the highly-emotive issue of Gaza and dogged by accusations of abuse and intimidation.
With community tensions in the U.K. heightened against the backdrop of the Israel-Hamas conflict, MPs have also spoken of their experiences of receiving death threats and their concerns for the safety of their families after the government announced an extra £31 million to protect elected representatives.
The new security package will enhance police protection and help fund private security guards for those facing a higher risk.
In addition, it will ensure all elected politicians and candidates have a dedicated named police contact to liaise with on security matters.
At the same time, Mr. Sunak warned the U.K. was descending into “mob rule” as he told police they must use the powers they have or risk losing public confidence in the face of ongoing pro-Palestinian protests.
It followed chaotic scenes in Westminster last week over the vote on a ceasefire in Gaza.
Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle broke with precedent in his handling of the proceedings because he had concerns about the intimidation suffered by some parliamentarians and wanted to give MPs the widest possible range of options for the vote.
But the backlash to his actions, which spared Sir Keir Starmer from the prospect of a damaging revolt by MPs demanding a ceasefire, has left his own position in jeopardy, with dozens of MPs backing a motion of no confidence.
While the focus of the PM’s remarks were clearly Islamic extremists and the pro-Palestinian protestors rampaging through our city centres every Saturday, he struggled to be even-handed, condemning both Islamists and the “far Right“, saying they “feed off each other”.
The Mail has more coverage here.
Stop Press: Sam Melia, a far Right activist, has been sentenced to two years following his conviction for inciting racial hatred and conspiring to commit criminal damage. GB News has the story. I gave the following quote to the reporter, Charlie Peters:
Sam Melia’s conviction points to the shortcomings of the ‘stirring up’ clauses in the Public Order Act.
Why is he guilty of ‘stirring up’ racial or religious hatred, but not George Galloway, some of whose comments about Israel and Zionism have been equally incendiary? Yet Galloway is now the MP for Rochdale, while Melia has gone to prison for two years.
Either the law is applied consistently, without fear or favour, or it’s not fit for purpose.
It cannot be one law for right-wing white working class men and another for left-wing politicians.
For some examples of the incendiary things George Galloway has said, see this tweet by the Campaign Against Antisemitism.

Yeah some nutters have blown up our coal fired power stations, hang draw and quarter them! On the question of who let in these large Muslim populations who thought that was ever going to end well?
Yup to say it’s a bit rich coming from him is being generous.
The biggest threat to UK democracy since 2020 has been HMG
“The biggest threat to UK democracy since 2020 has been HMG” especially people like P Mordant.
I would save very few of them
All establishment parties are a clear and present danger to us all.
Lets get a new movement started ————JUST START OIL.
At least the people of Rochdale got to vote as they wished, unlike the SNP in the Commons, in the mother of all parliaments.
How far is far Right? And who decides? The Suffragettes, the paid members of the WSPU, were extreme. They were pretty far out in their protests. Yet they are lauded as achieving an extension of democracy. Has democracy in a remote shire disturbed the centre of power?
Most of them chose not to vote, and look what crawled out of the woodwork. That’s democracy, I suppose.
Are you sure about that? I read somewhere that 82% of the votes cast were postal votes. At least, that’s what I think I read. It seems a remarkably high proportion.
43.2% postal votes in Rochdale, quite the increase in 4 years…

The far right is anyone who doesn’t agree with the left
It is ironic you chose Rochdale to rant about Democracy. The Grooming Gang Capitol of Lancashire
I dunno, Mr Sunak sir, pissing half a trillion pounds of our money up the wall in the first few months of the “pandemic” (ahem) SEEMS PRETTY EXTREME TO ME.
But perhaps I am being unfair. You were only the Chancellor of the Exchequer at that time. Forgive and forget, eh.
I also recall being locked up for months on end, lied to by Government scientists and politicians, fined if I were to sit outside on a bench with a coffee, state sponsored and promoted abuse of elderly and babies, forced experimental injections or lose livelihood, A stasi regime of informing on your neighbours, and of course the issuing of papers to be allowed into social events, where it was required to cover ones face and keep away from other humans. But hey that’s the liberal, free thinking democratic conservative, Labour, Libdems, SNP freedom lovers we have managing us like cattle at present.
Heaven forbid people elect someone who actually treats people as sentient humans.
What a pity him and his elites still keep treating us as idiots.
Whenever elites or politicians use the words “Our Democracy”, they mean they need to enforce facisim..
One would hope the public isnt buying ay of these gloabalist buzz words bu who knows
It is rather amusing to see how rattled the snakes get when their nest is poked.
I care not a jot for Galloway but I suspect if he is hated by all the people who wish to take away our universal rights to ‘Save our Democracy’, I would err on the side of the one that wasnt trying to pull my pants down.
As a next step he’ll try to ban the Reform Party.
He’s a cheeky treasonous tw#t – he’s deliberately encouraged the extremists. In fact the firkin Next Tuesday is importing them.
Cue emergency legislation…”to keep us all safe.”
What a lying barsteward.
Running for the hills, arse saving exercise speech!
The last deadly far right attack?
Hummm!
I imagine this will be a minority view here but what comes to mind is “don’t let perfect be the enemy of the good”. I’m not holding my breath but hopefully something positive will come of this.
Far frigging right? What was the last national organised far right attack on democracy????
Yes we’re all far-right now, Dingers;

Governments who support and facilitate genocide by Israel are the extremists.
Congratulations on all the down-ticks! I wonder how many you would have got if you had left out “by Israel”.
I am astonished by how many DS readers are swayed by the obviously immensely successful Israeli propaganda. Israel can do no wrong – never, nor can any Israeli do any wrong, simply by definition.
Netanyahu and the IDF are clearly determined to exterminate all remaining Palestinians in Israel, a country which used to be called Palestine, whether by hunger or by plain assassination. And the few food supplies which manage to get past all the opposition into Gaza are an excuse to kill another 100 Palestinians, because they were ‘getting out of control’.
What a sad world.
I don’t downvote, but I think there are probably quite a few like me. I don’t want to see innocent people killed or suffering anymore than anyone else,. However there are times where that becomes inevitable. Firstly you have been sucked into using the term ‘Genocide’ when the Israeli action is no such thing, by definition. On the other hand, you ignore that the stated purpose of Hamas is the elimination of the state of Israel and its people, ie ‘genocide’ by its classic definition.
Second you seem to regard all reports by Hamas or the ‘terrible atrocities’ visited upon them as gospel, a rather fanciful leap as Hamas has been propagandising this situation since day one. On the other hand we did see the terrible atrocities visited upon Israeli civilians, something that has been conveniently forgotten. Food shortages and such. I would look first to Hamas. I get the impression that they would allow all their civilians to die of starvation on TV if it meant they could get one over Israel.
We clearly see this from two sides. I believe Israel has the duty to protect itself and its citizens and that is what it is doing. You seem to think that civilians who voted for and support the government that wants to see the end of Israel should be somehow isolated from their support and decisions.
Don’t try and bombard me with a history lesson. I know it already. We are talking about achieving a lasting peace between Israel and Gaza. It will need compromise, not rockets and AK47’s. In either case, there are plenty of injustices around the world, plenty of innocent people losing their lives each day. Why this one.? Why is this one, not the number one, but the only one that seems to get brought up.
Pray for the hostages…
Pray for the hostages? Pray that they will not be killed by the IDF because that is what is happening? See https://libertarianinstitute.org/articles/what-really-happened-on-october-7/.
If Hamas killed 1,000 Israelis – which the above report disputes – then I really think the death of 30,000 Palestinians is more than an adequate punishment. Do you not think so?
I’m used to the down-ticks from the Tommy Robinson fans who now follow The DS.
Not all jews are Zionists and not all Zionists are Jews.
Many Western governments are run and funded by Zionists.
The financial system is run by Zionists.
Hollywood is run by Zionists.
The media is run by Zionists.
Zionists dictate the narrative.
Israel uses lies and propaganda to demonize Hamas so that the public supports the ethnic cleansing and genocide of ALL Palestinians.
The October 7th Hamas attacks have been blown out of proportion to facilitate this Gaslighting.
There is NO evidence of sexual assaults by Hamas.
There IS evidence of sexual assaults by the IDF.
Of course the killing of civilians and the taking of hostages is a crime.
Israel have been killing civilians and incarcerating people without charge for 75 years which is also a crime.
Resistance fighters have always committed atrocities against their occupiers.
Norman Finkelstein reminds us of what Israeli apartheid means:
“What happened on October 7th was a slave revolt inside Israel (technically occupied Palestine).”
The Daily Sceptic and its readers who support Israeli aggression are on the wrong side of history.
Well, I guess we’ll wait and see…
So all of Israel should up and leave? ——That is going to require an awful lot of removal lorries isn’t it?
Many of them have dual citizenship.
Maybe they should go back to their own country and stop trying to colonize the indigenous Palestinians.
I’m sure you have the same feelings towards people with brown faces that come to the UK.
The white indigenous Briton may soon have some things in common with the Palestinian people if, as expected, white Britons become a minority in their own country 2050?
I’m not in favour of mass immigration to the UK.
It has to be controlled more diligently than it has to date.
Your world view on this is simplistic. ———I ofcourse don’t want my country filled up with all the sectarian clutter being brought here for political purposes. But that horse has bolted. We are not a Nation anymore, we are just a region. ——–The phrase “In an ideal world” is just a phrase. None of us are going to get the utopia we want
“Our democracy”, says the Hindu Billionaire who forced himself UNELECTED upon the nation, after his Globalist mates made all the other candidates suddenly and mysteriously withdraw. Even Tory Party members were denied their democratic right to vote for the next leader.
Toby Young was right to point out that Sunak “struggled to be even-handed, condemning both Islamists and the “far Right“, saying they “feed off each other”.” Sunak is nothing but an embarrassment to the nation.
Nobody wants Sunak, nobody wants Putin, nobody wants Lula, nobody wants Humza, nobody wants Varadkar, nobody wants Kim or his evil sister. And yet there they all are, in total defiance of the people who pay their salaries.
Bang on.

Another example of the tag line ”stop the boats” being nothing more than an intelligence-insulting BS slogan ( along the lines of ”safe and effective” then ) is when you see evidence of them definitely *not* stopping the boats, but the French ferrying the migrants over to UK waters ( from only 2 miles out from the French coastline ) where the RNLI taxis them in. Short clip on GBN illustrating this here;
”A total of 2,006 asylum seekers have been recorded crossing the Channel in 43 boats to date in 2024, according to official government figures.
The figures came as the Prime Minister denied he is ignoring concerns being raised by locals about the use of RAF Scampton near Lincoln as accommodation for asylum seekers.
‘I’m not ignoring them,’ the Prime Minister told BBC Radio Lincolnshire as he was challenged repeatedly on Monday.
‘We do need to make sure that we house people in appropriate accommodation and the best way to resolve this issue long term is to stop people coming in the first place.
‘So anyone who cares about this should be backing us to get the Rwanda Bill through Parliament so we can get a deterrent up and running.
‘I’m confident that we really will be able to stop the boats and that will mean that we won’t have this pressure in all our local areas to find places to house illegal migrants.’
https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13144885/Moment-French-escort-vessel-picks-migrant-dinghy.html
The Rwanda Bill?
You utterly deceitful, lying chunt. F O and die. What a perv.
We don’t need to ‘find places to house illegal immigrants’, fishy. We need to PROTECT OUR BORDERS. It’s utterly pathetic that an island nation, with a vast natural border called the English Channel, which once ruled the waves, with the mightiest navy the earth had ever seen, can’t stop random impoverished Africans from invading our shores in rubber dinghies.
What a pathetic nation we’ve become, the Victorians would be turning in their graves. And we’re about to get even more pathetic once Starmer and his band of Muslim-loving virtue signallers-in-chief enter number 10, with the Muslim-loving Beeb as our ministry of truth.
4 years of Labour and I think we’ll see something similar to the current Democrats administration in America, perhaps even worse, even more unstable.
“And now the end is near,
And now I face the final curtain
My friends I’ll say it clear
I state my case that’s so uncertain.
I’ve lived a life that’s shallow
I’ve followed each and every by-election
And more, much more than this
I did it the globalists way.
Regrets, I’ve not had any
But then again why I should I
I did what the WEF said
And saw it through without exception
I planned each traitorous course
Each Careful Step to hell and highway
And more, much more than this
I did it the globalists way”.
‘Democratically elected’ leader of the party of government rails against the democratic process that rejects his party
Whenever I see Sunak I am reminded of the old phrase – Tory wet.
Whenever I see him, I’m reminded of Scott Tracey of Thunderbirds. A marionette, being controlled by those who aren’t visible.
And when I hear him, if I close my eyes, I hear Blair speaking.
I think of Norman Wisdom, especially that walk of his. A Norman Wisdom cap turned to the side and Sunak would be the spitting image of Wisdom, and just as silly
How is it possible for this pm to ignore all the elephants in the room! Why did choose to give this less than important speech in front of #10?
let’s see off the top of my head he has never come out and discussed the current cost of living, the closure of banks, shops, the destruction of public property by rogue extremist groups who want to save the planet, the proxy war in ukraine/Russia, the genocide of people in Gaza, the lack of safety for all people not just MPs. I could go on, but you get the point. This pm picks very carefully who he will call extremist and does so in a big way. Why?
talk talk talk talk talk talk talk. ——–Rishi you had a Home Secretary (Braverman) that has told you all this already. You know that what she said is all TRUE. ——You are nothing but a hand wringing squirming parasite that talks talks talks. ——-Get OUT Rishi and anyone with half a brain should DEMAND Braverman is the next Conservative leader and the wimps removed.
Ah so is Theleme Rishi with the good guys now DS?
Extremist forces? That would be him and his globalist network of evil cronies.
