In this week’s episode of London calling, James and I discuss the recent forest fires in Greece and whether climate change or arsonists are to blame; James thinks it’s arsonists in the pay of environmental lobby groups, but I say that would be too dangerous since if it came out then the groups would then be liable for tens of millions of pounds in damages as well as causing untold harm to their reputations; this leads to an argument about whether there are enough honest reporters left to expose such wrongdoing and that, in turn, triggers a heated discussion about whether the journalist Ross Clark is a genuine climate contrarian because he often prefaces his pieces by saying he doesn’t dispute that the world has got a little bit warmer in the past 150 years (which I think is sensible); we then segue into a discussion of our holidays this year, both those we’ve already had and those we’re planning, with James saying he may go to Amsterdam; we then agree that cannabis should probably not be legalised; and, in Culture Corner, James discusses the new University Challenge as well as having almost finished Anna Karenina – which he declares the best novel he’s ever read – while Toby gives a lukewarm review to Hijack.
