In this week’s episode of London Calling, James and I kick things off by talking about the Free Speech Union’s latest case, a 14-year veteran of the Army Reserve – a Colonel, no less, who served as a medic in Afghanistan – who felt he had no choice but to resign when he got into trouble for defending women’s rights on Facebook; we then talk about the ‘debanking’ of Nigel Farage, who has been told by his bank of 43 years that his account is being closed; that leads to a discussion of whether there would be any circumstances in which a bank is justified in withdrawing service from one of its customers; and that, in turn, leads to an argument about whether there should be any limits to free speech, with James saying no, and me drawing the line at betraying state secrets, inciting violence and child pornography; then, in Culture Corner, we agree that Hijack, the new series on Apple TV+ staring Idris Elba, is not MacDonald’s, but I think it’s Gourmet Burger Kitchen, whereas James thinks it’s Burger King.
