For my business I am reliant on networking and visiting business shows. I have kept an eye on the Covid policies of big exhibition centres such as the NEC since lifting of plan B restrictions on 27 January. Some exhibition centres are still keeping the Covid pass as a requirement of entry (which turns out not to be a matter of not having updated their websites after 27 January. They have updated and say they will still maintain Covid status checks). Some leave it at the discretion of the event organisers. This is the problem with politics only half abolishing measures.
The legal obligation to check Covid status at big venues is gone. Therefore, there is no justification to keep the Covid pass (if there ever was). I refuse to go to a show if they ask for my personal medical data upon entry. However, I need to go to these events.
I want these passes gone and not perpetuate a 'papers please' habit, that was wrong in the first place. I have approached one well-known centre for their reaction to the possibility of people presenting at their doors without a Covid pass.
I hope there are more people in my situation that want to go back to normal on their terms and not to a conditional normality.
Reminds me of a time (pre-Covid) when I attended a personal security conference at the London Excel Centre. I was physically checked, my laptop bag scanned by some black stick waved around. Looking back its like visiting an open prison, though I assume the HM coffee is better.
It's tricky, but if you have a defined list of people you want to meet, I'd be creative and get 4 or 5 together to meet at a coffee shop or a cafe for a lunchtime meal. Not only will you drown out the dross from these conferences centres, but have quality time together. I suspect others may not want to share the medical history too.
- Have 3 or 4 options for cafes/restaurants near location.
- Connect with top contacts beforehand, perhaps provide (screen-grabbed map) and time.
- Connect with cafes to see if you can get a deal, private table etc. I'm sure they will appreciate the extra income.
