New Zealand’s 2022 Freedom Convoy and Parliament protests were an uprising against Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s severe ‘No Jab, No Job’ mandatory COVID-19 vaccination regime, one of the harshest worldwide. The protests took place two years ago this month, and today, February 10th, marks two years since the pivotal ‘Hold the Line’ day.
A professional filmmaking team was on the road and embedded with the protesters throughout the month-long convoy and protest. Now you can watch the film they made, River of Freedom, which lays out the reasons behind the uprising, who the people were, why they were there and what happened. The New Zealand documentary River of Freedom began streaming on December 13th 2023 and within 24 hours was the fourth most watched movie in NZ on iTunes, after Barbie, Denzel Washington’s The Equaliser 3 and Taylor Swift’s Eras and ahead of Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.
The documentary is “a unique and visceral account of the under-reported and divisive furore that erupted in NZ over its Covid policy,” says Journeyman’s CEO, Mark Stucke who secured worldwide rights. It is now available to rent or buy on YouTube, Apple TV, JMAN and Vimeo.
River of Freedom was entirely crowd-funded, with no Government or lottery funding. It was distributed independently and reached number 10 at the NZ box office in its third week, nudging Oppenheimer out. Ignored by mainstream media and major theatres, the documentary was the most watched film in the country on September 21st 2023. Audiences travelled from far and wide to watch, with ticket sales compared to Barbie, Oppenheimer, even Lord of the Rings.
