An NHS trust is asking patients to specify their gender identity from a list of options, sparking criticism for the associated costs and concerns about clarity in healthcare. The Telegraph has the story.
An NHS trust is asking patients to choose what gender identity they are from a list including “Demiboy”, “Genderfluid” and “Questioning”.
The form, administered by The Royal Brompton, which is run by Guy’s and St. Thomas’s NHS Trust, has over 10 options for patients to select from, as well as “Another gender identity not listed here”.
From a drop-down menu, patients are invited to choose from: Agender, Another gender not listed here, Choose not to disclose, Demiboy, Demigirl, Female, Gender fluid, Male, Non-binary, Other, Questioning, Transgender male or Transgender female.
Critics have questioned how much money the trust spent to research, develop and implement the digital drop-down menu.
Professor Karol Sikora, the oncologist, received the form from The Royal Brompton. He told the Telegraph he was asked to decide his identity after a small operation six weeks ago.
The procedure “had nothing to do with my sexual orientation – it’s not my goolies that were operated on”, he said. “They sent me a follow-up for an appointment in the clinic and with it came a form, which I had to fill in online. As predominantly older people are the ones who go to outpatient clinics, little old ladies in Clacton are getting that to fill in. It’s ridiculous that we’re spending money on this.”
