https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2026/09/17/world/russia-brazen-attacks-europe/

A Bloomberg source close to the Kremlin said outright that Russia intends to “make life hell” for Europe through asymmetric hybrid operations over its support for Ukraine.

Last weekend’s drone assault at a train station near the Ukraine-Polish border as European and U.S. dignitaries were passing through is but the latest example. Such attacks had been largely taboo until now, offering further evidence of a growing brazenness and willingness to risk foreign victims.

Many incidents — particularly cyberattacks and hacks — go publicly unreported, meaning the true scope of the hybrid campaign is far larger than what’s known.

Over the past two months, Russia has focused its attacks on defense-industrial and logistics targets directly tied to support for Ukraine, a NATO official told the agency.

“Russia is consistent in identifying weaknesses in NATO’s infrastructure and is willing to attempt multiple tactics and targets in a flexible and increasingly risk-taking manner,” Emily Ferris, Royal United Services Institute

Andrei Fedorov is now Chairman of the Fund for Political Research and Consulting in Russia. He is hardly at the heart of power.
