The National Education Union is pushing for a legally enforceable maximum indoor working temperature of 26°C, which would force schools to halt lessons during heatwaves. The Telegraph has the story:
The union is also calling for taxpayer-funded cooling “hubs” for communities to use in “extreme heat”, and a legal right to paid time off for nominated staff to complete climate-change training.
The demands are listed in a motion submitted by the NEU to the Trades Union Congress (TUC) annual conference in Brighton, which starts this weekend.
If passed, it will become official TUC policy, which aligns the priorities of the organisation’s 47 member unions.

Heat pumps are fine if they move heat indoors but are the devil’s machines if they move heat the other way, apparently.
Why, after one hot Summer is everyone behaving as thought these high temp June, July & Aug months are now going to be the norm? We all know that next year the weather will go back to its usual erratic low/high temps with rain showers and four seasons in one day…

Di they also want the British tax payer to fund workers in the tropics so they don’t have to go out in the midday sun. Gosh, however did I get by between the ages of 8 and 21 when I spent most of every day in the summer helping on the farm.
Either we were hot and dusty or hot and sweaty of wet because it rained. I suppose I’m entitled to counselling and compensation: ooops, my employer was my father and he has been gone 27 years.
Will this also apply to civil servants ‘working’ from home? Say, if their home office is in their conservatory?
Or in their garden?
So, thermometer in a classroom hits 26° C. Lesson stops. Teacher is no longer allowed to work. Pupils leave to run riot in the town. Sanctions? What sanctions?
The NEU (No Education Union) seems very keen for its members to ‘down tools’ at every possible opportunity, whilst still – of course – being paid a full salary. We saw this before, during the Covid nonsense.
I wouldn’t trust them to train my dog, let alone educate my grandchildren.
Mrs is a 30 year veteran of the classroom. She would agree with you. The stories I hear of people, on handsome salaries, doing gymnastics to avoid their responsibilities. It beggars belief
