Just Stop Oil Announces End of Protests After Miliband “Made Demands Government Policy”

by Will Jones
27 March 2025 3:34 PM

Just Stop Oil has announced that it will end its campaign of disruptive protests as it claimed Ed Miliband has made its main demand of no new oil and gas “Government policy”. The Telegraph has more.

The eco-activist group, known for a string of high-profile protests including blocking motorway traffic to disrupting events such as the World Snooker Championship, said it was “hanging up the hi-vis”.

Its final demonstration will take place in Parliament Square on April 26th before the group ceases all direct action.

JSO’s main objective was to wean the UK off fossil fuels – a policy now being implemented by Mr Miliband’s Net Zero department.

In a statement on Thursday, JSO boasted that by changing Government policy, it was “one of the most successful civil resistance campaigns in recent history”.

“We’ve kept over 4.4 billion barrels of oil in the ground and the courts have ruled new oil and gas licences unlawful,” it said.

“So it is the end of soup on Van Goghs, cornstarch on Stonehenge and slow marching in the streets. But it is not the end of trials, of tagging and surveillance, of fines, probation and years in prison.” …

Sir Keir Starmer has sought to distance Labour from the eco activists, previously criticising their actions and saying protesters should face the full force of the law.

Reacting to the announcement on Thursday, his spokesman said: “Obviously that’s a decision for them.

“We’ve been clear that when it comes to oil and gas it has a future for decades to come in our energy mix.” …

Founded by activists Roger Hallam and Indigo Rumbelow three years ago, the group has launched a number of disruptive and often illegal protests.

As a result, 20 of its members are currently serving prison sentences.

These include Hallam, who was jailed alongside 15 of his co-conspirators for his part in four demonstrations including climbing the gantries over the M25 and causing rush hour chaos for thousands of drivers.

Worth reading in full.

Amusingly the original announcement (pictured above) read: “Our original demand of new oil and gas is now government policy” – new oil and gas, what a good idea! It was however soon amended to say “no new oil and gas”. Pity. With most of the world coming round to a more realist Net Zero sceptic view, it was probably too much to hope JSO had seen the light as well.
