Trump and Putin Agree 30-Day Ukraine Partial Ceasefire

by Will Jones
18 March 2025 7:00 PM

Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin agreed to a 30-day ‘energy and infrastructure’ ceasefire in Ukraine during a two-hour phone call today in the first steps towards ending the war. The Mail has more.

The partial ceasefire agreement will be in effect for 30 days. Talks for a permanent peace will “begin immediately” in the Middle East although Putin told Trump that he has several conditions he wants met in order for the fighting to end.

“The leaders agreed that the movement to peace will begin with an energy and infrastructure ceasefire, as well as technical negotiations on implementation of a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, full ceasefire and permanent peace. These negotiations will begin immediately in the Middle East,” the White House said in its readout of the call.

The White House statement also contained a key detail hinting at a realignment of the Middle East: a statement of support for Israel over Iran.

“The two leaders shared the view that Iran should never be in a position to destroy Israel,” the readout said.

It hinted at the potential for a future shift in the world order in which Moscow becomes less forthright in its support of Tehran, which has been a longtime ally.

“The leaders spoke broadly about the Middle East as a region of potential cooperation to prevent future conflicts,” the White House said.

Trump has repeatedly threatened Iran for its support of the Houthis and demanded it end its nuclear programme. If he can foster a closer relationship between Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he could see an end to the Russia-Iran alliance, which would benefit the United States.

The White House also hinted at a shakeup of American foreign relations that would include a closer relationship between Washington and Moscow.

Both leaders “stressed the need for improved bilateral relations between the United States and Russia”.

An improved US-Russian relationship “has huge upside”, the administration noted. “This includes enormous economic deals and geopolitical stability when peace has been achieved.”

Meanwhile, when it comes to Ukraine, Putin had conditions for a permanent end to the fighting, saying he wants the United States and its allies to end military and intelligence assistance to Ukraine to halt hostilities, according to the Kremlin readout.

“It was emphasised that the key condition for preventing the escalation of the conflict and working towards its resolution through political and diplomatic means should be the complete cessation of foreign military aid and the provision of intelligence information to Kyiv,” Moscow said.

European allies, however, are worried that could result in Moscow rearming itself during a ceasefire, leaving Kyiv short-handed and playing catchup.

However, the White House said peace is the goal.

“Both leaders agreed this conflict needs to end with a lasting peace,” the White House said.

“The blood and treasure that both Ukraine and Russia have been spending in this war would be better spent on the needs of their people.”

In other news out of Tuesday’s phone call, Putin agreed to send back 23 critically injured Ukrainian prisoners.

Their call lasted about two hours, beginning around 10 am ET and concluding at noon. Trump spoke from the Oval Office, where he was joined by Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

As part of it, Trump agreed with Putin’s idea for an ice hockey game between US and Russian players, the Kremlin noted.

Looks to me like they’ve agreed on a set of very vague platitudes, I.e. nothing.

I suppose they’re trying to send out some good vibes while they figure out if they can actually agree on something.

Maybe, though it is a lot further than Biden or anyone else got and a far cry from “Trump is dangerous – he is going to start WW3”.

Biden, Kamalalalalalarama, Starmtard, wanted/want WW3.

The Russians are not giving up any territory. Why should they?

Jewlensky and the Jewish oligarchy ruining the Uketopia need to be removed. Only then is there peace.

No question. And I hope he succeeds.

But good intentions and good words only go so far.

JFK was very keen on peace, so was Khrushchev supposedly and yet they took the world to the brink of a nuclear war, the closest we’ve ever been apparently.

Let’s see how this plays out.

You have to start somewhere, and this somewhere is something meaningful.

After three yeas of pointless slaughter, they wont be pointlessly slaughtering each other today, Isn’t that something to be hopeful about, no..?

Yes, it looks like a step in the right direction, so in that respect good.

But it’s not a ceasefire no matter how many times they use the word.

I just don’t like being treated like an idiot. I don’t like the fact that they’re trying to sell me something that just isn’t. Why not tell the facts as they are: we”re setting up talks, as a gesture of goodwill we’ve agreed not to bomb each other’s energy infrastructure for a month, we remain optimistic our talks will lead to an end of the conflict.

I mean all they’ve actually agreed is to continue talking.

If the 4 People’s Republics get their freedom from Ukraine and the random shelling and murder of their people by the dictator Zelensky and his Nazi regime stops then a point has been achieved.

A ceasefire. There you go; exactly the sort of thing a Nazi like Trump would arrange.

He’s a peacemonger I tell you!

Trump is dangerous – he will start a war. Oh, hold on, he’s not warlike enough, we must double the size of our military so we can fight the wars the Americans don’t want want to fight. You couldn’t make it up.

Except no such thing has been accomplished yet.

What the hell is an “energy and infrastructure ceasefire”? I never heard that in my life. Sounds to me like they maybe agreed to not bomb energy and infrastructure and added the word ceasefire to make it sound better. I suppose they can add it to the “hospital, school and old people’s home ceasefire” they already had. Honestly, it sounds like a load of bullshit to me. Like a tiny scrap of something to give the impression that they’ve accomplished something.

It is something. It is what it is. It’s not a complete ceasefire but that’s not Trump’s fault.

It’s basically nothing. The fighting continues, both sides continue killing each other. The intention to avoid certain infrastructure targets is as much of a ceasefire as a the intention to avoid bombing and killing young children.

Well, the fact that they seem to want to seem like that they have accomplished something may be positive. But I agree it’s early days.

Not perfect but better than “we’ll fight Russia to the last Ukrainian”

Unfortunately Ukraine was always going to lose. The military aid may have inflicted damage on Russia but it resulted in more deaths on both sides. Easy to sit from afar and advocate for someone else to put themselves into harm’s way.

I’m rather bemused by Trump’s current diplomatic stance and his first couple of months have certainly been interesting.

He’s most certainly not Adolf reborn. I think Brandon was way worse

The Russian version of the telephone conversation can be read here: http://en.kremlin.ru/events/president/news/76477.

Whereas the White House report can be interpreted as Donald Trump having done amazing work and achieved so many agreements, the Russian report is more restrained and reiterates that possible solutions need to be thoroughly worked out and that any solutions to the conflict must “take into account the essential need to eliminate the root causes of the crisis, as well as Russia’s legitimate security interests”.

The only immediate agreement was to “mutually refrain from strikes on energy infrastructure for 30 days”. One can imagine the Russians have, for the moment, already destroyed sufficient infrastructure and see no need for additional efforts in this direction in the short term.

The agreement to send back critically injured Ukrainian prisoners is just an addition to a standard prisoner exchange: “23 heavily wounded Ukrainian soldiers currently receiving aid at Russian medical facilities will also be repatriated” – saving Russia costs.

Concerning the Middle East, “Joint efforts will be made to stabilise the situation in the crisis spots and establish cooperation on nuclear non-proliferation and global security”.

Since Israel has restarted its genocide in Gaza, dropping US bombs on Palestinian families trying to survive in the ruins, it appears Trump is once again being subservient to Netanyahu who clearly wants to start a war with Iran. However, Putin recently signed a strategic partnership treaty with Iran, so he will be keen to ensure that does not happen.

So we should expect this news imminently then;

”Former advisor to the President of Ukraine Oleksiy Arestovych says he is confident that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will soon resign, which will occur after a ceasefire agreement is signed.
Arestovych shared his theories about the future of the current government in Ukraine on the YouTube channel of journalist Vasily Golovanov. In his opinion, Zelensky will not seek another year as president.

“Today, the well-known formula looks like this: Zelensky will voluntarily resign at some stage after a ceasefire,” he argued.
As the former adviser added, Zelensky will not survive beyond the election campaign, which is supposed to take place after martial law is lifted in the country. When this moment will come depends on the peace talks.

Arestovych argues that Ukraine will then undergo major political changes. In his opinion, the end of the war will benefit, among others, the military and nationalists, who will want to hold the current government accountable, and the presidential campaign will be very emotional.
“It is possible that this process will become chaotic, which no one can afford, as it will lead to the collapse of the entire, painstakingly built structure,” he said.”

…just to provide a quick update: Putin went on to break the agreement a few hours later by attacking Ukrainian power infrastructure. Turns out that, back in that Oval Office spat, Trump and Vance would have done well to listen to Zelensky instead of kicking off like 8-year-olds.

Do you have a source for your information? Firstly, one has to accept that a certain delay will occur before all Russian troops receive the information not to attack energy infrastructure. Secondly, the Military Summary Channel opens an interesting viewpoint (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ffstPu6KhnA) on the Trump/Putin phone call that it did not include Zelensky who is not particularly happy with the outcome.

There is no ceasefire.

Putin rejected it.

President Trump’s administration then came up with a face saving formula.

Drones from both countries then continued their attacks.

It will be interesting to see how the captured NATO ‘advisors’ in the collapsing Kursk incursion are dealt with.
