Friedrich Merz has warned of the end of NATO as the incoming German Chancellor is set to defy Washington by teaming up with the losing Left-wing parties, including the extreme Greens, and freezing out surging AfD. The Telegraph has more.
Friedrich Merz, who is poised to become Germany’s next Chancellor, has warned NATO could be finished and Europe must prepare to build an alliance “independent” from the US.
In stark comments, Mr Merz, 69, leader of the centre-Right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), suggested the continent may have to “quickly” establish an “independent European defence capability”.
After exit polls predicted Mr Merz would win the election, Donald Trump hailed the result as a “great day for Germany and for the United States of America”.
But Mr Merz said Europe’s 80-year alliance with the US could be consigned to history, as he believes Mr Trump is “indifferent” about the continent in blunt remarks about his plans for his upcoming administration.
In stinging criticism of Mr Trump, the CDU leader likened the Trump administration’s tactics to Moscow after Elon Musk backed the far-Right AfD in the German election.
“My absolute priority will be to strengthen Europe as quickly as possible so that, step by step, we can really achieve independence from the USA,” Mr Merz said.
“I never thought I would have to say something like this on a television program. But after Donald Trump’s statements last week at the latest, it is clear that the Americans, at least this part of the Americans, this administration, are largely indifferent to the fate of Europe.”
He added: “I am very curious to see how we are heading towards the Nato summit at the end of June … whether we will still be talking about Nato in its current form or whether we will have to establish an independent European defence capability much more quickly.”
Following a campaign roiled by violent terror attacks, the conservative CDU/CSU bloc won 28.6% of the vote, followed by the AfD with 20.8%, preliminary results showed on Monday.
The result makes a far-Right [sic] party the main opposition for the first time since the Nazis.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s centre-Left Social Democratic Party [SPD] was projected to come a distant third place at 16.4%, the worst result in the party’s history. It all but guarantees that he will soon stand down after overseeing a slump in Germany’s economy, partly caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Mr Merz must now form a coalition government, but mainstream parties had vowed not to team up with the AfD. …
Mr Merz will now embark on lengthy coalition talks and is expected to seek an agreement with the SPD as well as the [extreme Left] Greens, who won 16.4% and 11.6% of the vote respectively, according to preliminary results.
The discussions will aim to freeze out second-place AfD, which is considered by other German parties to be too extreme to work with.
However, Alice Weidel, the AfD co-leader, said on Sunday night that she was ready to help Mr Merz form a Government that reflected the “will of Germany”.
The soon-to-be Chancellor could face pressure from the Trump administration in the coming months to let the AfD into his coalition, as Elon Musk and J.D. Vance, the US Vice President, have both called on German leaders to end their exclusion of the party.

Worth reading in full.
Writing in the Telegraph, Elisabeth Dampier says “the AfD isn’t far Right and it isn’t going away”:
Years of recession, widespread anger at mass migration, high energy prices, and the cost of living crisis will put the CDU under huge pressure to deliver. It will become increasingly difficult to justify excluding the AfD when the majority of the country have voted for Right-wing parties, only to be denied a Right-wing Government. And part of that blame lies with the other parties and the media (both domestic and foreign) constantly referring to the AfD as far-Right regardless of its common-sense policies.
The AfD has doubled its vote since 2021, but is still falling short of its own ambitions. It is no longer a phenomenon reserved to the former GDR, winning over many working-class voters from the SPD, increasingly including those in West Germany, and many first-time voters.
Campaigning as a fairly standard Right-wing populist party has enabled it to pick up this support, meaning that even if it is excluded from Government again by the ‘firewall’, it will only become more popular as the face of the real opposition to the miserable status quo. We can easily anticipate the fate of whatever national coalition forms; similar coalitions at the state level have led to political gridlock as they agree on nothing except stopping the AfD.
With Trump, Musk and Vance supporting the AfD, it can expect to do even better in future, until it becomes so big that the firewall can’t function any more. On the last day of the election campaign, Merz announced that, “The Left is over. There is no Left-wing majority and no more Left-wing politics in Germany any more.” Perhaps he needs to heed his own statement.

Stop Press: Eugyppius reports that with the failure of the radical Leftist BSW to reach the crucial 5% threshold for Parliamentary representation (by a mere 13,435 votes), a CDU/SPD coalition is now looking likely and the Greens will be pushed out of Government. This is likely to mean a betrayal of voters’ hopes for improved border security and reduced welfare spending, but may mean some of the most egregious Net Zero measures, such as the petrol and diesel car ban, will be axed.
A weak and directionless CDU/SPD coalition seems inevitable. Whether it will last a full term is uncertain, and its inevitable failures will continue to feed the opposition. The temptation to initiate proceedings to ban the AfD will grow in the coming years, and this will be a particularly dangerous period for the party. Among other things, a second round of dreaded state elections in East Germany is approaching in 2026. Sachsen-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern will elect new state parliaments, and last night we got a preview of how that might go. Sachsen-Anhalt broke 37% for the AfD, and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern 35%. The firewall is on the verge of making the East ungovernable, and I doubt anyone believes it will survive the decade.

The inane ramblings of whoever put together this commiegraph article are certainly not worth a read. Here’s a suggestion: Stop getting your lines directly from the leaders of German left and hard-left parties. Or at least quote the juciy bits, like that one female Die Linke (ex-SED) politician who publically stated that all members and supporters of the AfD should be “sent to the gas chambers.” Certainly nothing so extremist in a political position like that that all good democrats wouldn’t immediately want to form a coalition with such a party. OTOH, being opposed to mandatory heat pumps is decidedly an extreme bridge too far!
“commiegraph”
Yes I am sick to the back teeth of the Telegraph.
Bit of a shyster this one, isn’t he? Did the vast majority of the people of Germany that voted ( I won’t say ”Germans” as there’s apparently 7 million migrants who have the right to vote over there ) just continue to lie back and think ”More of the same please, because you’re doing such a great job and clearly have our best interests at heart”? As long as there’s globalists and so many supporting them the AfD are never going to get anywhere near leading that country, even as a coalition;
”GERMANY – The Globalists win again.
New chancellor Friedrich Merz is their perfect pick.

I won’t say ”Germans” as there’s apparently 7 million migrants who have the right to vote over there
As German living in England, I have no right to vote. I must not vote in the UK because British politicians don’t want that. And I must not vote in Germany because German politicians don’t want that. Democracy has absolutely no problem with this. Democracy does, however, have an enormous problems with Turks living in Germany not being allowed to vote there despite all of them (as far as I know) may also vote in Turkey. That’s the nice thing about democracy: It always pans out in the end: Germans living in foreign countries have no right to vote. And to compensate for that, Turks living in Germany have two.
Depressing indeed.
As an Englishman resident in Italy I have the same problem.
Funny old game, democracy.
I don’t really care that much because I don’t really believe in this so-called democracy, anyway.
The background of this story is that the German left, SPD and Greens, are very much in favour of turning all immigrants in Germany, legal and illegal ones alike, into German citizens as quickly as possible because – as they say – democracy demands that essentially all people living in a state have a right to vote there. Yet, they’re perfectly aware that their fellow democrats in other countries don’t even think of applying the same principle to Germans living there and they’re also instrumental in denying Germans living in foreign countries a right to vote in Germany. According to Sahra Wagenknecht (BSW), around 230,000 of these registered for this vote but most of them were rejected.
Likewise, I’m British, living in France. Whatever happened to ‘No taxation without representation’?
Snap, I am a Brit in Germany. No vote even in local elections since Brexit
Same here – I live in thailand and the only thing I am entitled to in the UK is to pay taxes. Seriously pisses me off.
Apologies but I heard that: Since the end of June 2024, multiple citizenships have been possible in Germany, allowing you to obtain dual citizenship for Turkey and Germany.
Since then, they’ve been officially acknowledged. It’s an open secret that Turkey will gladly re-accept ex-Turks who became German citizens and that German authorities will simply look the other way in such cases.
You don’t mention the EU, but then, there’s no democracy there, is there? Brussels is a dictatorship that has caused more harm to Germany than anyone else, probably even Putin!
It’s surprising that on such a fair system that isn’t ‘past the post’, in this recent election there are over 13% are without representation, as well as the AfD being assigned to the scrap heap.
EU
—-
The EU is the institutionalized French hegemony over western and middle Europe and politically, it’s mostly the council of governments of the member states plus an elected parliament which plays a somewhat lesser role than the national parliaments because these are ultimately sovereign while the EU is not. The EU also has a very small executive located in Brussels whose job is to prepare detailed policy proposals based on directives from the council of the various heads of government which then become EU regulations if both the EU parliament and the council government ministers vote for that.
PR
—-
Proportional representation is the most beloved voting system of party leaders because it disenfranchises the so-called voter even more than FPTP. In the UK, voters elect MPs. Under PR, voters just assign numbers of MPs to political parties whose leaders decide anything else, ie, both who’ll become a member of parliament and what these MPs will in future vote for (or against) based on the same system of party blackmail which also exists in the UK. A professional politician will only have a career if he stays on the right side of the leader of its party because these can kick him out of parliament at the next election and severely reduce his parliamentary role before this time.
Depressing stuff;
”Boomers decided another election, and this one graphic tells the whole story.
The 60+ age cohort makes up 40.3% of the eligible voters in the country, leaving every other age gorup in the dust.
This demographic also has far higher turnout compared to other cohorts.
German media reports that this group will continue to decide elections for the next 20 years.
Total boomer victory.”

Important to note: It is not the immigrants but the ”enemy within”, the traitors, to thank for this result;
”A lot of users are sharing these two maps to explain the election outcome.
While the far fewer foreigners in the east of Germany may go a long way to explaining the AfD’s victory there, it does not tell the whole story.
The reality is that many Germans without a migration background did not vote for the AfD, and instead chose the CDU and CSU. It was not foreigners that handed power to the CDU/SPD/Greens, it was Germans without a migration background.
In Bavaria (West Germany), for instance, Bavarians voted for the CSU in overwhelming numbers (37.2%), even if the AfD scored a respectable 19%.
If the AfD wants any chance of power, it will need to somehow peel off these conservative voters from the CDU/CSU.
Given the CDU is about to almost certainly form a coalition with the far-left SPD, this may very well be possible, especially if no action is taken on the issue of immigration.”
https://x.com/RMXnews/status/1893957984260067423
Euggypius of this parish provides I think much better analysis.
Well do feel free to contribute something that meets your standards at any time.
Bavaria is a bad example because the CSU is the bavarian party and has governed this state with an absolute majority since it was re-founded after the second world war. The same is true to a lesser degree in the other parts of Western Germany. The overwhelming majority of directly elected MdBs come from the CDU and always came from the CDU. That’s simply what people with a conservative disposition will do: They will vote for the guy who has always been their MP because it has always been their MP and hope that it’ll somehow work out in the end.
If the outcome will now be another grand coalition (CDU/CSU + SPD) and everything else just continues unchanged, the next election might become interesting (the AfD doubled its vote share in this one, from 10% to 20%).
“…Friedrich Merz is their perfect pick”
Did you spell the last word correctly?
Merz has already done a 360 degree u-turn on border control and there will be more u- turns to follow. We should look for signs of his government collapsing within the year.
Let’s just get this straight… The wrong party on the Right can’t form a coalition with the unspeakably wronger party on the Far Right, thereby avoiding the German deadly sin of Nazism.
Except the Nazis were self declared National Socialists, a neat combination expediently covering both political bases, and also believers in State supremacy and control of industrial production. Therefore arguably more Left than Right. Go figure.
So instead the wrong Right party is forming a coalition with the right Left and Green parties. In other words, Berlin unchanged. Ja, Ja’s, Mein Chancellor, all round.
In other German news, former Chancellor Mutti Merkel’s family fled the West for the East, just as the Berlin Wall was going up; Mutti was educated in nuclear physics at Karl Marx University, Leipzig; and Mutti later shut down the German nuclear power station fleet for fear of earthquakes, in a country hundreds of miles from the nearest major European fault lines. Go figure again.
In the great Chancellery up in the sky, Bismarck pores intently at maps of Europe past and present and wonders why he ever bothered.
“Angela Merkel’s astounding open border policy granting close to a million Muslim immigrants entry into Germany could be seen as self-flagellation for Germany’s historical transgressions. Laced with typical progressive lunacy. What better way to make up for the Holocaust than by admitting “refugees” who frequently exhibit genocidal hatred of Jews.”
Gad Saad – from his book ‘The Parasitic Mind’.
And speaking of borders, this didn’t take long, did it?
”Is this the quickest U-turn in political history?
After the CDU campaigned on strict immigration measures to take votes away from the AfD, chancellor-in-waiting Friedrich Merz told a press conference the day after the election that “none of us want to close the borders.”
“I want to make it very clear that none of us are talking about border closures,” he said, “although this was claimed at times during the election campaign.”
His party is expected to agree on a coalition with the previously governing SPD — a so-called Grand Coalition — despite that party recording its worst-ever election result as voters flocked to the left and right.”

Ayn Rand was a clueless Russian housewife who emigrated into the USA and not a great political theoretician of the 20th century. If this had been otherwise, she had known that the fatherland, which is more than just the of its citizens, has been a very prominent part of Prussian and later, German state ideology since Hegel invented the so-called German idealism. That wasn’t an idea of Hitler but he just continued the right-wing German tradition in this respect. He was himself a monarchist, came to power in a coalition with the other German monarchists and always ardently opposed political socialism/ communism.
In the first third of the 20th century, the dominating social and thus, political issue were the large masses of pretty poor and disenfranchised factory workers the traditional political elites preferred to ignore. The socialist movement had formed in the 19th century, initially to improve their lot through societies (that’s were the social came from) for self-improved. There was, for instance, a tradition of Christian socialism. The non-christian socialists culminated in the SPD (same party as of today) which nominally adopted revolutionary Marxism as political ideology towards the end of the century.
The socialism of the NSDAP was essentially a marketing trick to appeal to industry workers politically afiliated with SPD. It was supposed to communicate that the NSDAP, too, wanted to address their problems, just in a different way. There were even some sort-of revolutionary socialists in the party centered around Georg Strasser but these split off from the main party before 1930 because they didn’t believe that Hitler supported their political goals any longer.
[I don’t know how often I already wrote this text but I expect that the weird theories of the sex-obsessed emigrant housewife-witout-a-clue will resurface in the not too distant future.]
“The result makes a far-Right [sic] party the main opposition for the first time since the Nazis.”
It’s ignorance. The National Socialist German Workers Party (aka Nazi, correct acronym NASDAP) was NOT far right – clue in the name, it was a far left socialist Party… collectivist, statist, central economic planning and control, oppression of dissent – that’s Far Left, like Communism Fascism and current British, French, German Governments and of course the EU.
Anyone wanting to know what “Far Right” really is – clue, it’s the opposite of Far Left by definition – read Adam Smith’s books – extract below:-
“Little else is requisite to carry a state to the highest degree of opulence from the lowest barbarism, but peace, easy taxes, and a tolerable administration of justice; all the rest being brought about by the natural course of things.
All governments which thwart this natural course, which force things into another channel, or which endeavour to arrest the progress of society at a particular point, are unnatural, and to support themselves are obliged to be oppressive and tyrannical.”
According to this American definition, every state which ever existed prior to 1918 was governed by the far left, Tsarist Russia in exactly the same way as the German Empire, as ultra-conservative ‘reactionary’ Austria at the time of Metternich or Lenin’s and Stalin’s Soviet Union. This means it’s entirely useless for classifying political systems in a real world where more variants than [fringes] of the US republican party opposed to everything else, whatever it might be, exist.
The traditional left/ right division in politics came from the national assembly of revolutionary France where the monarchists sat on the right and the republicans on the left (both equally far right according to the circle of US-centered polit-clowns mentioned in the last paragraph). Both liberablism and republicanism are thus left-wing political ideologies and the so-called libetarians even share Marx’s idea of the state as principally useless system of oppression solely existing for the benefit of some privileged class. They don’t agree who this privileged class actually is, somewhat simplified, the nominal Marxists believe it’s the libertarians and the liberarians believe it’s the nominal Marxists. However, they share a political goal of overcoming the state in favour of a communal anarchy and these kind of faction fights are typically for far left.
As to
All governments which thwart this natural course, which force things into another channel, or which endeavour to arrest the progress of society at a particular point, are unnatural, and to support themselves are obliged to be oppressive and tyrannical.
Marx couldn’t have said that better himself.
We don’t want communists in Europe, be they American or Russian.
“Friedrich Merz has warned of the end of NATO as the incoming German Chancellor is set to defy Washington by teaming up with the losing Left-wing parties, including the extreme Greens, and freezing out surging AfD.”
NATO was set up to stop Communist colonial expansion – The Far Left.
The raison d’être for NATO collapsed with the Berlin Wall – which is why Russia is still needed as the perpetual enemy so the bureaucrats, arms makers and money-lenders can profit from the Everwar.
Russian aggressiveness returned after a short pause with it’s Georgian and Chechnyan wars amongst others. Putin is ex KGB and I guess you can take the man out of the KGB but not the KGB out of the man.
The 2 enemies of the free west are Communism and Islamism and they are mates.
Yes, it’s “The Unholy Muslim-Marxist Alliance”, or “The Red-Green Alliance”, as some have said.
After divorcing his Christian Russian wife, Putin married a Muslim athlete who bore him two sons, who have been raised as Muslims, like their mother’s family. Putin has had no more trouble from Chechens or other Muslims within Russia since then.
He certainly divorced his first wife Lyudmila. However I don’t believe he has married again. It is probably also worth pointing out that Putin is not a Communist, whatever else he may be. In 1999, he said that Communism was “a blind alley, far away from the mainstream of civilization”.
Currently Germany donates less than 2% of its GDP to defence, it had to play war games with broomsticks and its Helicopters do not work, and yet they wonder why NATO is falling apart!. The thing is just like the UK, France and all the other countries with the exception of Greece, they have not put sufficient funding behind defence, instead they have relied upon America to fund them, and frankly America has had enough, who can blame them.
Then we come onto this calling for an European army, does that mean 3rd year of recession Germany is suddenly going to cough up more cash than it did in NATO? likewise the rest?. Europe is no longer a democratic entity as is currently being perfectly exemplified by the Germans, who have put a firewall against the second most voted for Party the AFD, instead they will club together with bottom of the pot groups, the Far left, the Greens, etc in fact anything to keep the people’s choice out. This is how Brussels and Kier Starmer think. A European Army would be a very, very dangerous thing it would be controlled by these despots in Brussels and it would be used against the people of Europe and the UK. It must not be allowed to happen,
We spent our money on “our” glorious NHS which employs more people than the Russian Army, so when the ballon goes up we can mobilise all our angels and saints – and the immigrants so essential for its huge cost and dysfunction – into battle, stethoscopes swinging, syringes akimbo, bedpans rattling. Tally Ho!
“The result makes a far-Right [sic] party the main opposition for the first time since the Nazis.”
how many more times, the nazis or the ‘National socialist German workers party’
we’re far-left, the clue is in the title ‘socialist’
The same far-left that Merz is now sucking up too!
The US is not indifferent to Europe, what has changed is the rise of China as the primary threat. Russia is now at a weak point, this is exactly the right time for the US to shift its focus almost entirely towards China, not forgetting Iran.
The hidden primary threat is the Indian Subcontinent.
You could make an argument that the Conservative and Labour Parties in the UK have run a discrete firewall to exclude UKIP and then Reform, mostly using the MSM.
But unless the Conservatives and Labour undergo huge policy shifts the ‘firewall’ cannot hold.
Globalist Handbook, Chapter Three: “HOW TO NEUTRALISE PATRIOTS”
1) Allow them to form their little parties, and take note of all their slogans and policies, so that you can pretend to adopt them later yourselves.
2) Wait until they have gained huge popularity with the public enraged by your own treasonous actions, then announce that you are changing your policies, slyly copying all the nationalist policies of the Patriots, to draw voters away from them. You might want to fund your own fake patriot party as a rival to the real ones, Globalist Meloni in Italy being a good example, to keep true Patriot Matteo Salvini out of the leadership.
3) If the true Patriots eventually win power in elections, and the public is celebrating, as with Le Pen in France, Wilders in the Netherlands, Bolsonaro in Brazil, Morawiecki in Poland, Sebastian Kurz in Austria, or Weidel in Germany, you can either form coalitions with the Leftists and Greens to prevent any Patriot from becoming the national leader; or you can use “Lawfare” with corrupt judges to try to throw the Patriot leaders into prison, as in Austria, Brazil, France, the Netherlands and Italy; or you can try to assassinate the elected Patriot leader, as in Brazil. Or you can just use electoral fraud to re-install your own corrupt Globalist Communist leader, as in Poland (Tusk), Sweden (Lofven), and Brazil (Lula).
Or you can just get your corrupt judges to cancel the elections, as in Romania.
“If we can effectively kill the national pride and patriotism of just one generation, we will have won that country. Therefore we must continue propaganda abroad to undermine the loyalty of citizens in general and of teen-agers in particular.”
Lavrentiy Beria
“To produce a maximum of chaos in the culture of the enemy is our first most important step. Our fruits are grown in chaos, distrust, economic depression and scientific turmoil. At least a weary populace can seek peace only in our offered Communist State, at last only Communism can resolve the problems of the masses.”
Lavrentiy Beria
What a good find! It’s sobering to realise how long ago they were planning this. Yuri Bezmenov tried to warn the West, but few listened.
Your two quotes from Beria ought to be taught to every teenager in school.
A small step forward if the Greens are out of the coalition this time because the FDP failed to qualify for any seats.
From a revolutionary perspective it is all to the good because it was just get the Germans riled up to boiling point. But from a humane perspective it just means more suffering and justice deferred is justice denied. And the longer that industry remains dormant the more difficult it is to bring it back. In that sense it is already too late. The neoliberals and neocons are dead. Any attempt to buck this tendency can only end in disaster. You will see that in the next few weeks.
If the ultimate goal of the Ukraine War was to make Russia weaker, the euro block has failed miserably.
It’s all about Ukraine. Our dogs-dinner whoring press have regurgitated the deep state nonsense about Ukraine: Putin’s Stalin and evil. Plucky little Ukraine. Russias a rust heap etc etc.Nomstop till Moscow. Putin must be jailed.. and now? It’s all over. The US, NATO and EU are broke, the Yanks blew the Nordstream and condemned Germany to a depression, And they still rim them.
This is just doubling down. Won’t end well.
Thank you Herr Merz. It’s going completely to President Trump’s plan. You just can’t see it
The East needs to rebuild that wall. We might see Germans escaping from West to East this time.
