The fire service is “institutionally racist, misogynistic and homophobic” according to a new report commissioned by the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC). GB News has the details.

The report added that firemen in Britain failed to represent a “diverse” society with less than 10% of the force being made up of women and 5.4% belonging to ethnic minorities, according to data sourced in March 2024.
In wider society, around 51% of the population are women and 18.3% belong to ethnic minorities.
Praised by the NFCC for helping to support “safe and inclusive places to work”, the report said: “The common ‘image’ of a firefighter is, for the most part, of a white heterosexual male turning out in a fire engine to fight fire.
“The diversity of the service needs to be much more reflective of the communities it serves and the wide range of services it delivers.
“Whilst progress has been made, the pace has been slow and progressive action has been applied inconsistently. Too many people are still being let down.” …
“Leadership programmes need to focus as much on inclusion as they do on operational and strategic competence,” the report’s authors wrote. …
NFCC chair Mark Hardingham said the organisation was “committed to delivering” on the report’s findings.

We need Firefighters who are first of all capable of saving lives, carrying people out of burning buidings, putting out fires. Stop with the DEI crap they are putting lives at risk whilst they prioritise Government targets over the safety of the public.

Why in the world must any emergency service or organization reflect the local community? As soon as they say that you know full well that meritocracy is going down the toilet and you’re going to get substandard candidates filling those roles due to better applicants being passed over, as per the ridiculous term ”positive discrimination”. Well no discrimination is positive is it? But apparently discriminating against white, straight men ( seriously, what has anybody’s sexual preferences got to do with anything? ) gets a free pass and by their ‘logic’ is in fact fair.
And just because the best applicants for a particular role might be white men does not by default mean that everybody else is being treat unfairly. This is a total and utter nonsense and this crapola is going to cost lives. Look at this cringeworthy clip;

The only way they can increase the diversity within the fire service is by lowering the standards and positive discrimination.
At that point the fundamental ethos of the fire service changes to “we care more about our DEI credentials than saving people”.

How can somebody be that far gone in the head that they abandon all common sense and write off shed-loads of lived experience over the years? Laughably, in the above bit I shared, his responsibilities include “Equality and Inclusion” and “Health and Safety”. So surely the latter cancels the former out, as both cannot co-exist? I don’t know how they can endure the heat from wearing all their necessary protective gear, and the heat from the fire, the heat from all that physical exertion of bashing in doors and windows to rescue people, even carrying them down a ladder sometimes in the heat of summer, without passing out themselves from sheer exhaustion.
It is one of the most difficult, dangerous jobs in the world, and they should be paid higher salaries than politicians; yet many are actual volunteers, risking life and limb to save the lives of others. May God bless them all.

I seem to recall that the last time the FBU had a female chief the result was the Grenfell fire. Is that what we want again?
As long as women and ethnic minorities have equal access to apply for firefighter roles where’s the problem?
It is possible that certain disabilities may make some people ineligible for this highly demanding job! There may also be requirements relating to height, age, physical build and level of fitness.
Equality of Opportunity.
Ability to undertake all requirements of the role is paramount, regardless of the applicant! It used to be called merit.
