A PE teacher of my acquaintance once showed me a letter from a parent, asking for her son to be excused from gym class that day: he had contracted a bad case of “twisted tentacles” and was still too sore to participate. At the time, we both just presumed the boy’s mother simply couldn’t spell the word ‘testicles’. An alternative explanation, of course, could have been that the child had chosen to self-ID as being an octopus.
If so, and he happened to turn up in a vet’s surgery one day in a big fish tank on wheels demanding a member of staff untwist his tentacles for him, one would expect the lunatic to be immediately shown the door. And yet, if an equally delusional man in a dress should happen to turn up at a gynaecologist’s surgery in our newly enlightened, trans-friendly times, demanding said medical professional pop on rubber gloves and examine his vagina, fallopian tubes or womb, even though he doesn’t have any of these things, because he is a man, then would the doctor just be allowed to wheel him off-premises similarly? Not in France, it would seem.
