Welcome to this Special Episode of the Sceptic, with Professor David Starkey CBE, the eminent and acerbic historian, author and broadcaster.
In a wide-ranging conversation, host Laurie Wastell and Professor Starkey discuss the grooming gangs scandal, why Elon Musk’s takeover of Twitter represents the end of the long 20th Century, Trump’s second term, free speech, state censorship and the “noble lie” of multiculturalism, the parallels between communism and liberalism and why Keir Starmer’s response to the Southport massacre has been “contemptible beyond contempt”. In the premium section, they discuss English individualism and why it gave birth to the modern world, the challenge of imported ethnic tribalism, national identity in an age of immigration and what is to be done.

Wonderful David; thank you for your brilliantly informed, beautifully articulated, open, honest and principled assessment. You are so sorely needed now, more than ever before.
Brilliant a man who speaks the truth and has sadly been puniched for it
Agree with David Starkey about the importance of free speech and allowing the free exchange of ideas – but towards the end he talked about controlling Imans which seemed to go against this philosophy. Also one must bear in mind that there are many communities of British abroad who do not assimilate themselves with the local culture, so this is not something that is unusual.
With regard to terrorism perhaps we should be asking ourselves why so many people would want to attack us. Perhaps it has something to do with our forays into foreign territory, especially more recently in the middle east. These are not always totally welcome even if sometimes well intentioned. The primary objective, or intention, of venturing into Iraq for example was certainly not one of assimilating with the local population or learning to speak Mesopotamian Arabic.
The expat Brit abroad usually has no reason to assimilate as their stay in that country is usually temporary. They exist in a cultural bubble. Those who are seeking a new permanent life elsewhere usually head for Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA – whose cultures we spawned. They each have their own culture but with Judeo-Christian origins. The British diaspora pose no threat to them and assimilate well.
Really enjoyable and thought-provoking. The depth of contempt for Starmer was particularly delicious. I’m not quite as old as David Starkey but in my early 60s I am old enough to recognise fondly his description of the British national characteristics – dry humour, self deprecation, the quiet killer put-down etc etc – and to sincerely regret that these seem to have vanished from public life.
Superb episode. What an insightful man Starkey is.
The phrase that came originally from the Soviets ‘ you are factually correct but not politically correct’ is exactly what is happening in UK today.
Interesting, the instant I posted this a down tick appeared. AI?
Always a pleasure to watch/listen to Mr Starkey and one learns so much.
It’s going to be a long 4 plus years……
