Some of Britain’s best-selling hybrid cars will be banned from sale after 2030 under a Net Zero crackdown proposed by Ministers. The Telegraph has the story.
The Government favours a strict limit on CO2 emissions that would mean popular new hybrids made by Range Rover, Ford, VW and Nissan could no longer be sold.
In consultation documents published the day before Christmas, the Government confirmed plans to allow some new hybrids to remain on the market for five years after a ban on pure petrol and diesel cars comes into force.
However, the proposed emissions limits are stricter than expected and would mean that swathes of popular vehicles have to come off the market.
The proposal is meant to prevent a situation where some petrol and diesel cars would be banned while some existing hybrids that are more polluting remain on sale.
It would limit emissions to 115 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometre, potentially ruling out sales of many “mild” hybrids – those that have electric motors but cannot use them to travel significant distances – as well as a smaller number of plug-in ones.
Models that would face bans under this rule include the mild hybrid versions of the Ford Puma, Range Rover Evoque, Nissan Qashqai and VW Golf, among several others, analysis by the Telegraph suggests.
The true impact could be even larger because emissions ratings for most plug-in hybrids today do not reflect their real-world performance and are set to be updated.
In many cases the true emissions of plug-ins are 243% higher, according to the Government. If emissions figures are revised up higher in the coming years, many more models will come off the market.

Profanity and abuse will be removed and may lead to a permanent ban.
Long story short, only the upper classes will be allowed to drive.
C’mon free gear, out with it – you know you want to!
What is an upper class. Poor feudal britain, stuck in The dark ages.
Net zero… sounds like the same insanity as ‘zero covid’
How did that go?
As usual it depends on who you ask and their ‘motivation’… the official version, or the real one
Insanity v Reality.
Reality wins!
But damage will be massive.
It’s not going to happen. The whole Net Zero charade is collapsing, the political elites who introduced it and are pushing it are being replaced by the “Far Right” starting with Trump in the US.
Jobs are being lost throughout the UK & European economies, power cuts will become more frequent, energy prices will continue to go up, people just nit accept it any more.
Germany is being economically destroyed by Net Zero and even if AfD can win next year a lot of the damage will take more than a decade to repair. Their economy is tanking so fast that even a city like Munich is running out of money as their income from sales tax sinks as the people have no money to spend.
Trump will put an end to the crazy currently gripping the ZuK. You can bet on it.
Planning to buy a nearly-new 100% ICE car as close to 2030 as possible and then hope it lasts and spares etc continue to be available.
You might have to import one yourself.
Mine is a 2007 Toyota Avensis 2.2 diesel, only cost £1200 at 90k. Like many VWs & Japanese models they can go forever. Look at Morocco….Their Grand Taxis are old Mercs from the 80s & 90s.
Good initial idea but what if they close all the Petrol / Diesel forecourts ,
Yes there is that danger but I figure the more ICE vehicles there are on the road the longer we can last out.
All predicated on Ponzi scheme economics. They know it is all coming down and you will be lucky to be driving anything. They aren’t exactly making every effort to keep fuel supplies going. You could see Anglo-American geopolitics of the last few years as a concerted effort to strangle comsumption in Europe. They will rob you blind on the way out just like they always do. Nothing left save a puddle of piss and your eyes to cry with.
Morning Jabster , you certainly have a way with words
This b0ll0cks has to end now. So far as I can tell, it won’t come through the ballot box but via the medium of pitchfork and crowd numbers.
All together now…
Our salvation will not arrive via the ballot box.
115 g/km could just about wipe out any segment C size vehicle, unless some other measures are made to squeeze under the test limit. It reminds me of what happened when I had a Honda Civic made in 2013, at a time when the VED was related to CO2 emissions/km. Anything less than 100g/km was zero duty, so for a while I paid no tax on that. In that case, it was only just under, and apart from various tweaks to reduce aerodynamic drag (like tight ground clearance – forget about SUV designs), it used Michelin Primacy tyres with group A resistance, so it only just came under the limit on test. In the real world, it was still pretty good. It was a 1.6 l diesel engine.
Of course, tyres vary a bit, and I don’t think there was any requirement to specify what could be used for replacements.
Can’t wait to get out of this hell called the UK. The gov’t has definitely gone mad.
Where you going
Merry Christmas
