When the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) didn’t do its job during the Covid pandemic, Dr. Jay Bhattacharya stepped in. From early Wuhan data we knew that older people were at least a thousand times more likely to die from Covid than younger people, but that’s a relative risk. To find the absolute risk and the infection fatality rate, one also needs an antibody seroprevalence study to determine how many people have been infected. That’s the job of national public health agencies, but unlike their counterparts in for example Sweden and Spain, CDC was missing in action.
To fill the knowledge gap, Jay sprang into action on a shoestring budget, conducting the now famous Santa Clara seroprevalence study together with Drs. Eran Bendavid, John Ioannidis and others. It showed that seroprevalence was higher, and therefor the infection mortality rate was lower, than what fearmongers had claimed.
