Israeli football fans have been kicked and beaten on the streets of Amsterdam on Thursday night by a pro-Palestine mob shouting “now you know how it feels”. The Telegraph has more.
Dutch police arrested at least 57 people after fans of Maccabi Tel Aviv football club were attacked in a riot on Thursday night described as “a pogrom” and “Jew hunt” by Israeli media.
Some fans were forced to leap into canals or hide in hotels to escape. Rioters shouted slogans like “free Palestine” and “now you know how it feels” during the violence.
Ten Israelis were injured and three are still missing, with footage on social media showing supporters being chased with knives, a pedestrian hit by a car and a man in a canal being ordered to say “free Palestine”, after the Thursday night Europa League match against Dutch side Ajax. …
The violence came after hundreds of Maccabi supporters gathered at the city’s National Monument in Dam Square, where police made several arrests on Thursday for breach of the peace.
There had been a heavy police presence in the city ahead of two major football matches coinciding with a week of Free Palestine demonstrations, and Dutch authorities had named a number of likely trouble spots ahead of time, including Dam Square.
Footage shared on social media in the lead up to the match showed the visitors shouting “F— Palestine” and tearing down Palestinian flags.
Rioting broke out on Thursday evening when other groups at the National Monument chanted pro-Palestinian slogans at the Israeli fans, Dutch media reported.
Footage later emerged of men being chased and dragged down cobblestone streets after the football match.
