Former Tory MP Rejected From Teaching Jobs “Over His Political Views”

by Will Jones
30 September 2024 6:17 PM

Former Conservative MP Jonathan Gullis has said he is unable to get a job – or an interview – in teaching because his political views are held in “disdain” by the Left-wing profession. The Telegraph has the story.

Jonathan Gullis, who was a teacher before he entered Parliament in 2019, said he believed he had failed to get an interview for a teaching role because most people in the teaching profession treat Tories with “disdain”.

Mr. Gullis was elected the MP for Stoke-on-Trent North as part of Boris Johnson’s 2019 landslide, but lost his seat in July.

Before he entered the Commons he worked as a teacher at a number of schools, including the Fairfax Academy in Sutton Coldfield, north of Birmingham.

His experiences mirror those of defeated MPs and ministers in 1997, when the Tories lost to Sir Tony Blair’s party.

Mr. Gullis told Times Radio: “It’s nearly three months now and I’m still without a job, right? And that’s scary. I’m a father of a four year-old and a two year-old. I’ve got a wife who’s extremely supportive.

“I was a teacher before and I’ve applied for a few jobs and sadly not even had an interview yet. So actually, I think the days when being an ex-MP was something that was wanted or desired is no longer. I think we’re now seen as a problem. And so that’s a challenge.”

Asked whether the problem was that he was a Tory, Gullis said:

When I entered teaching it was always slightly more centre-Left leaning, but I always felt that it was fair.

When I left the profession to enter Parliament I felt that being a Conservative was something that was treated with disdain, and I do think there are a lot of schools that will see who I used to represent, and maybe my views which they may not like, and because of that – not because of what I can do as a teacher – but because of that I won’t even be given an interview.

I think that’s a damning indictment on the profession that I do love and do care about, but sadly if you’re going to have too many activists in the classroom, which I do think we have at this time, then politics is going to sadly determine who’s allowed to work in that profession.

This is not good for pupils, it’s not good for parents, but is particularly bad for pupils because they need teachers to be coming to deliver high-quality education. Not pursuing the very woke agenda that sadly has entrenched many of our education sectors.

Homeschool option.
Team up with other [cancelled] tutors. Keep turnover low, below VAT threshold, separate companies when they reach it, and keep costs down.
Watch the children fly through their education.
Win:Win.

And support cash as well, in lieu of other methods of payment. Less paperwork that way as well!

Find a new career and keep your sanity. The ‘Teaching Behemoth’ is beyond saving. At some point the educational system is going to self-implode. All inefficient and incompetent systems based on lies, untruths, and anti-reality positions eventually do.

Why do you think it might implode. The NHS hasn’t and it’s been this bad for longer.

It might take forever, but the NHS will also implode.
A factor will be money – eventually £200 billion per year is impossible to fund.

I imagine that teaching is pretty skewed by now. Quite a reversal given that the teacher’s unions and teachers generally were always considered to be black sheep in that they were vehemently conservative up until the early 1980s. Plenty could be said about what brought about the change. I went to school in the eighties and it was very left wing even then. History was all about the labour struggle, suffragettes, the origins of the welfare state and the injustive of the colonies. And in English literature there was a lot of Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon along with feminist texts and even novels about the horrors of military juntas in South America. And so if it has continued along this course then one can only imagine.

Yes my “old man” was a teacher although he preferred to call himself a schoolmaster teaching in a private (well actually a public) school. The socialist leaning teachers were very much in the minority then (in the 60s and 70s) and thought of as a bit quirky but unlike today the views of all were respected and the atmosphere in the school friendly and supportive.

I have done the same questionnaire on YLive about being a teacher a couple of times but sadly there was no question as to why you wouldn’t consider teaching so you can’t say it is too woke and lefty and discriminates against people who can tell the difference between a male and a female.

Can he tell us what he or his party did to counter this or to make it illegal and not done.

my observation is the Tory governments did a great deal to facilitate this over 14 years, and more.

Sorry Jonathan old boy but the state of our country has just caught up with you.

…and I hope he wasn’t teaching English, judging by the way his article is written…

There are no conservatives in the Conservative Party. Nothing is sacred. Marriage, family, local community. They would laugh at such propositions. They are as disgusting as their Labour counterparts perhaps a margin less hypocritical.

And what did the Not-a-Conservative-Government do about this situation Mr Gullis?

Nada; zilch; SFA.

Welcome (back) to our world. Tough, isn’t it.

So the Blob is advertising for people to enter teaching but cancelling some who are ready to get back in.
Our kids schooling should not be constrained by politics of one type. Pathetic.

I suggest you apply to an international school, preferably in Asia, especially Singapore. Shouldn’t be a problem there as most Governments in Asia lean to the right, even if they say they don’t.
