Public sector strikes are threatening to spiral out of control after train drivers and border guards announced new walkouts on Friday. This is in spite of the new Labour Government agreeing inflation-busing pay rises for various public sector workers. The Telegraph has more.
Families face end of summer travel misery as passport control staff prepare to down tools at Heathrow airport between Saturday August 31st and Tuesday September 3rd.
Meanwhile, train drivers at LNER, which runs services between London and Edinburgh, are to strike every weekend for the next three months. Aslef announced the strike just 48 hours after securing an almost 15% pay rise for drivers, spread across three years, to end a separate dispute.
Earlier this month, Sir Keir Starmer’s Government also gave a 22% pay rise to junior doctors, spread across two years, to end their long-running industrial action.
The new strike announcements came after warnings that inflation-busting pay offers to end industrial action would encourage other unions to strike.
On Friday morning, Nick Thomas-Symonds, a Cabinet Office minister, had said it was “unfair” to suggest the pay deals would lead to more walkouts.
He and other ministers have argued that the agreements would ultimately save money, given the wider cost to the economy of strikes.
Kieran Mullan, a Tory shadow transport minister, said: “After a no strings attached offer to throw cash at a Labour-backing union, it should shock nobody that more strikes are on the cards.
“It’s a taste of what is to come – a nationalised train service seeing Labour-backing unions staging walkouts despite a bumper pay deal.
“All Labour are doing is encouraging the unions into more of this anti-passenger action, putting our rail network at the beck and call of unions whilst passengers pay the price. These strikes risk spiralling out of control under Labour.”
James Cleverly, a Tory leadership candidate, said: “The Labour Government has been played by its union paymasters. This latest wave of strikes will be devastating for families who rely on train travel to see their loved ones.
“Offering a no-strings pay deal to militant strikers whilst stripping millions of pensions of their winter fuel payment is nothing short of a national embarrassment.”
Border Force workers will walk out on the final weekend of the summer holidays. Terminals 2, 3, 4 and 5 at Heathrow, the UK’s busiest airport, are all set to be affected by the walkout.

All part of the plans to introduce a universal basic income and restructure of society and the economy. The Marxists are getting all their nice little ducks in a line.

No, Cleverly. It’s not a national embarrassment. It’s nothing short of EVIL.
This has all happened even before Labour demolish the strike laws which have protected the people of this country for 40 years or so. I’m old enough to remember when strikes were more regular than most peoples inner works. Bodies stacked up, bins not emptied, no bread, no electricity, no gas. We had it all and more and none of us ever wanted it back.
Don’t forget 22% inflation, 16% mortgage rates, 35% lower tax rate, 83% upper rate, 46% corporation tax, devaluation of the Pound, power cuts, Brain Drain.
Ah… the good old days
Can somebody explain to me why the clenched fist salute, clearly a communist reference, is any more acceptable than a Nazi salute, considering that Stalin and Mao were responsible for far more deaths than Hitler and it’s still going on in China and N Korea?
And duck …
I know yours is a rhetorical question, but…
I think most people are completely oblivious to the intentions of the state. Our supposedly democratic state is nothing of the sort and its sole purpose is to grow bigger and more powerful. To do that it needs to break the traditional bonds of family and exert an ever-increasing paternal force on its citizens. Both Hitler’s Nazi Germany and Lenin/Stalin’s communist Russia both worked towards the same end goal – the total loyalty of the individual to the state. The left, however, have successfully sold Hitler as a far-right fascist whereas the ‘intelligent’ class still view communism as a project that just wasn’t implemented properly – they bemoan the flimsiness of the Communist Manifesto and wish they could try again with a better blueprint. In short, supposedly far-right total state bad, far-left total state good. Apologies for the rant.
Not a rant at all – spot on
70 years of welfare State = total State dependency.
Solution get rid of the welfare State but the serfs want to keep it.
The problem isn’t having a safety net, it’s not requiring to even think of ensuring one for yourself, for you and your family, ever, so that any mishap is a complete surprise.
With that in place, we can then leave everything up to the State, apart from forgetting he who pays the piper calls the tune.
No mention of the Church of England?
You are right: it has already disappeared.

Communism has a good PR agent.
I recall someone once saying ‘Appeasement never works.’…
Kneel’s “government” is blatantly ratcheting the public sector workforce in an initiative designed to lead ultimately to societal breakdown. Two-tier policing and so-called justice is intended similarly to bring about social collapse. And if mass rioting fails to take hold there will be another manufacturered race incident.
It looks like monetary break down is on the cards, ‘helped’ by policies from across the Atlantic, and Channel.
Real Labour (not Blair’s ersatz variety) Government, so it’s déjà-vu all over again – back to the1970s and the British people deserve it.
