Former BBC newsreader Kate Silverton has said she left the corporation because it was failing to challenge the impact of Covid lockdown policies on children. The Telegraph has the story.
The former BBC newsreader said she left the industry in 2021 as it no longer brought her “joy”.
The mother-of-two said amid the pandemic she wanted to “‘be in a position where I was helping more” and decided to retrain as a child psychologist.
Silverton told Psychologies magazine: “To be honest, news wasn’t bringing me joy throughout that period of time, and I was questioning a lot of the policies that weren’t being interrogated as rigorously as they might have been journalistically, in terms of the impact I was seeing the pandemic having on children.
“I wanted to be in a position where I was helping more.”
The Government has faced criticism for its decision to close schools for long periods of time during lockdown, as well as its policies on children wearing masks.
The former Strictly Come Dancing contestant has a psychology degree from Durham University.
She joined the national broadcaster in 1997 and was a regular presenter of BBC News at One and BBC Weekend News.
The 53-year-old also made occasional appearances on the BBC News Channel and BBC World News.

“…in terms of the impact I was seeing the pandemic having on children.”
Kate. There was no pandemic. It was the LOCKDOWNS wot did it. Just say it.
And rephrase ‘plan’ in pandemic. I will not be implicitly manipulated by the media spouting this BS.
👍👍
Fair play to her, but it took her a while to smell the coffee!
Good for her. Although I doubt a psychology degree is going to be much help to anyone, least of all children.
On the contrary, a psychology degree will be a free pass into the PsyOps Nudge Unit, starting with producing some dodgy Asch Charts to pretend to show how 97% of the population conform with Whatever The Current Thing Is, then tuning ChatGPT to generate automatic immediate “debunking” of online sceptical comments, and how to finalise the Long March Through The Institutions to ensure that all professional standards bodies exclude sceptics. A lot of the theory was in place as far back as Climategate, but required armies of humans (usually unpaid newly-converted zealots) to implement in practice; nowadays it has been largely automated.
good comment
There was that female psychologist that was often on ITV & Murder documentaries who spoke out against Lockdown too. She has been interviewed on GB News. She did her job unlike so many who fester on Jeremy Vine and Talk TV.
At least she refused the commie bbc coin. Most don’t do that.
Good lady. Completely misjudged her.
Didn’t say so much at the time though. Another hindsight wannabe.
Kate———I would also be interested to hear what you think about the BBC stance on climate change. I know what I think and many subscribers on here think but it would be good to get the view of somebody who was actually in there and experiencing the BBC working environment on this issue.
I always liked Kate Silverton. Not a lot was made of her departure from the incompetent bbc. But I have to admit I quit watching msm at that time and have never gone back. Have not missed a thing. It seems like Kate sensed something was amiss and did not want to be involved. Smart woman..
