Public satisfaction with the NHS has fallen to the lowest level on record amid poor access to GPs and long waits for hospital care, particularly since the pandemic. The Mail has more.
Fewer than one in four (24%) people were happy with the health service in 2023, down five percentage points on the previous year alone.
It is the lowest level since records began in 1983, according to latest findings from the British Social Attitudes Survey.
The study, of 3,374 people in England, Wales and Scotland, is seen as the gold-standard test of how people feel about the NHS.
It reveals more than half (52%) are now dissatisfied with the NHS, the highest proportion since the survey began.
The main reasons for dissatisfaction are waiting times for GP and hospital appointments (71%), followed by staff shortages (54%) and the Government not spending enough money on the NHS (47%), despite record investment.
Health think tanks said there had been an “unprecedented downward spiral” in public satisfaction in recent years and warned political leaders should take note of the “depressing” results ahead of the General Election.
Satisfaction with the NHS peaked in 2010, when 70% of people were happy with the health service but it has since fallen.
It has suffered a particularly rapid decline of 29 percentage points since 2020, when services were crippled by the COVID-19 pandemic.
But will the public ever allow politicians to replace the NHS with a European-style social insurance model that actually works? Or is still too sacred even now?

I haven’t watched Putin’s speech, but I wouldn’t put it past him to do something just to confuse the opposing side. (Is he compos mentis? Dare we call his bluff on this? etc).
It was actually better to read the English transcript than watch the speech (unless you are a Russian speaker), because the translation is inevitably a bit jerky and doesn’t flow. The speech was very, very impressive even if you don’t agree with it all. I heard Enoch Powell speak at Cambridge as an undergrad and even though I didn’t agree with a word he said, the quality of his rhetoric was levels above most of what you heard there.
Yes, I was astonished listening to part of the simultaneously translated speech and then reading the transcript of it by how intelligent it was, how demanding of intelligence in its audience/the public, including how long it was. Can’t remember ever hearing a western leader speak to us like that, as if we had functioning brains, adult/mature attention spans, etc.
Mad, maybe. But why not have a go when your enemies are so weak and incapable of doing anything. My concern is how China will react on observing how the west has responded to the Ukraine. Will China say to Taiwan return to the fold as nobody is going to support you?

Four possible scenarios, there could be more:
1. The line we are being given by our government and media. Putin baddy, the West and NATO goodies, Ukraine innocent victims
2. The line explained by UK Column. The West (especially US and UK) baddies. Putin doing what he needs to do. Ukraine government and other groups in the country very dodgy.
3. The Trump supporters’ view. Putin is a good guy trying to deal with the perpetrators of the Great Reset etc, who figure greatly in Ukraine.
4. The bigger conspiracy theory. The whole situation has been deliberately created to cause massive disruption to energy, food and other trade. Putin, along with many other people of influence have been schooled as part of the World Economic Forum young leaders programme – all geared up to speed along the Great Reset.
I propose its a basket case of; West – overtly going against accords and agreements not to expand, irritating Putin. Ukraine – corrupt officials, dodgy dealings, poor government with poor backing, innocents not really at fault but being put over a barrel by their leaders. Drained of funds by the American first family hegemony. Russia – again the poor innocent Russian in their hut not really their fault, Putin sensed an opportunity to realise a poltical dream of his (he’s not made it a secret) not sure he’s even broken international law at this stage. Probably will be responsible for some innocent blood being spilled. Has the potential to escalate because the West will toy with the idea of supporting Ukraine (which keeps being referred to as THE Ukraine, euphemistically suggesting it is little more than a region of Russia anyway) but ultimately will leave Ukraine with its piece in it’s hand wanting more but not getting it.
Not only did the West reneged on agreements regarding the expansion of NATO, they and Ukraine have deliberately and repeatedly violated the Minsk accord.

Alternatively, he may be behaving quite rationally. We have breached the Budapest and Minsk accords, and started to pressure Russian border countries into joining the EU and NATO. This is seen as a major threat by Russia, and they have told us this repeatedly over the past 10 years.

Joining the EU is one thing but joining NATO is quite another so Russia might be entitled to object.

It’s far more plausible to argue that anyone going to the CFR and expecting honest and impartial advice is literally mad, because that organisation is self-evidently and systematically biased and dishonest on geopolitics.
The Russians are invading Ukraine for the obviously rational purpose of grasping the nettle created by the ongoing drawing of that country into the US sphere, and the use of war to achieve that goal, faut de mieux, will either work, or it won’t.
Either Putin has judged the situation correctly, or the western elites have done so. Let’s just recall that those same western elites by and large thought that invading Iraq, murdering Gaddafi and destabilising Syria were all great ideas. So their track record is abysmal.
Only time will tell if this is a wise move by Russia. It’s clearly rational.
