Ofcom has been flooded with complaints after a Bridgerton star told ITV that the view of Buckingham Palace balcony was “terribly white” on Coronation Day. The Mail has more.
Numerous people have taken to Twitter to voice their outrage towards Adjoa Andoh’s views during ITV’s coverage of King Charles on Saturday.
One commenter slammed Ms. Andoh’s comments as “ridiculous”, tweeting: “How can she get away with that? Anyone of white colour would have to make a public apology.”
A spokesman for Ofcom told MailOnline: “Any complaints we receive on this issue will be assessed against our broadcast rules, before we decide whether to investigate or not.'”
The Netflix star has insisted that she “didn’t mean to upset anyone” after sparking backlash amidst the crowning of King Charles and Queen Camilla.
As millions tuned in to watch the newly crowned King and Queen wave down to crowds on The Mall with the rest of the Royal Family, Ms. Andoh left her ITV co-stars stunned with her comments which have been described by some as “appalling”.
The star, whose father was of Ghanaian origin, was commentating for ITV on its live Coronation coverage hosted by Tom Bradby and Julie Etchingham when she said of the event: “We have gone from the rich diversity of the Abbey to a terribly white balcony. I am very struck by that. I am also looking at those younger generations and thinking: “‘hat are the nuances that they will inhabit when they grow?'”
Ms. Andoh, 60, who plays Lady Danbury in Bridgerton, left fellow pundit Myleene Klass – who was sitting next to her – appearing bewildered as she made her comments.
One viewer wrote online: “@ITV after the racist comment by Adjoa Andoh yesterday, I have now put in my complaint to Ofcom.”
One more viewer suggested he had also complained: “Was going to let it go but I’m really angry, so thought no for a change. Things like this need challenging.”
Defending her statement on BBC Radio 4 yesterday, the actress she said she “didn’t mean to upset anybody”. She told Paddy O’Connell:
I think I upset a few people yesterday I was talking about the day and how marvellous it was and then looking at the balcony at the end. And I suddenly went ‘oo it’s so white’ – because the day had been so so mixed. I didn’t mean to upset anybody, I just was…
O’Connell then interjected, telling her she had “nothing to apologise for”, adding, “You haven’t upset anyone”, before quickly moving on.
A flood of complaints to the regulator and a huge Twitter backlash would suggest otherwise, Paddy. Though presumably what he means is, you have upset anyone who matters. Any of ‘us’.
Andoh has probably been taken by surprise by the backlash. She’s used to inhabiting a world where those kinds of anti-white comments are par for the course and a signal of correct thinking. Within the woke echo chambers of social media and the entertainment industry casual anti-white racism bemoaning the “terribly white” state of this, that and the other has become commonplace. So I suspect her surprise may be genuine: when these kinds of prejudicial sentiments get expressed to a wider public, elite groupthinkers can get a shock that normal people do actually regard nasty comments based on race and skin colour to be offensive – even when that skin colour is ‘white’. Funny, that.
No apology, though.

Well as a white British person I don’t feel “offended”, don’t want an “apology” and will not be complaining to Ofcom. Never interrupt an idiot. Let her comment go viral, let her repeat it ad nauseam, let her double down on it. The more people that hear it and the more often they hear it the more people will realise where all this leads. Bring it on.
A few years ago I reading in the Evening Standard that Salisbury is “horribly white”.
There was a story some years back during the New Labour years about a sports club in the middle of Cheshire (Northwich?) that missed out on funding because it didn’t have enough coloured people – and never mind that this reflected the local population. And then of course there was the Market Rasen school marked down by Ofsted for being “too white”. As a wise person once said, there is no “positive” discrimination, just discrimination.
And by the way, if any group of people anywhere in the world was described as “terribly black”, would any BBC presenter say it was not “upsetting” people?
An acquaintance of mine who was from somewhere smallish in Lancashire but had become a metropolitan “liberal” Londoner once described his home town as being very white, somewhat apologetically. We don’t see that particular couple any more. He was mugged for his bike by youths on Hackney Downs because he decided not to avoid them (which is what his instincts told him to do) because he didn’t want to seem racist.
I understand your views tof but I saw a clip of this – I DID NOT watch Chuckles’ pantomime – and frankly I was f#ckin livid, not just that she had the cheek to make such a comment but because the TV host didn’t pull her up. To make matters worse the appalling BBC brushes it off with “never mind.”
I’ve never heard of this gormless, racist actress but what on earth qualified her to be commentating on a British occasion? As far as I am concerned every commentator should as a minimum have been Mother’s Pride white.
F#ck ’em! I’m sick of being expected to be apologising for the way I came out of the womb.
Indeed. I’m not livid, just worried that we’ll get to a point where it will get ugly and become completely tribal. That’s not my style but at some point we may need to man the barricades next to people we find unsavoury in defence of our future. See my reply to LaptopMaestro below on why I am “happy” for this woman to carry on chatting rubbish.
Yes I’ve seen your response tof.
And another thing – who was the woman next but one on the ITV sofa to this Andoh woman who says “yes indeed” and nods along as she gets her racist barbs in? She certainly wasn’t invited for her looks was she, let alone her dress sense? I assume her ignorance can be taken as a given.
I fear not. What will happen is King Chump III will ensure more Black people on the balcony in future. Government will introduce a Bill to make it mandatory for William’s brood only to marry Blacks.
This is the age of minority rule.
Maybe. I still think there’s a chance the masses will awake from their slumbers. We shall see.
Maybe they will follow in Justin Trudeau’s footsteps.
Where’s the Cherry Blossom tin?
The whole Trudeau schtick is a perfect example of where this nonsense on stilts is going. Can you imagine the fuss if footage and photos of a number of events emerged, showing Trump in blackface? But has BBC ever whispered criticism of Thudeau?
It won’t be a balcony just tree branches.
It’s like this – I want ritual humiliation of the vile woman.
I don’t know her but her comment was certainly vile, though I am not “offended” – I merely note she seems to wish me harm. What I want is for her kind of identity politics and the absurd war on/self harm of European civilisation to stop because those ideas become discredited, and for the whole “anti-racism” industry to crumble. Letting this woman speak and let rip and not apologise will IMO accelerate the point at which people realise this nonsense won’t simply go away if we ignore it, which is what people have hoped up to now. I don’t want her to say she didn’t mean to offend anyone and be allowed to move on. She will humiliate and discredit herself by being allowed to speak honestly about how she feels about whites and European civilisation.
Seconded.
Yes. Like that Pakistani woman who was hot to tear down Nelson’s Column.
Just try it, Dearie…
I disagree, if you normalise racism – whatever the form- then we are going down a slippery slope.
Well meaning white middle class liberals who either feel guilty or uncomfortable about how success in life is unevenly distributed, or just hope the whole horrid business will go away without the need for tears before bedtime, need to understand that it’s not going away and they are despised by our enemies and that “anti-racism” and all the other identity/victim politics hustlers will destroy our civilisation.
The balcony was white, but why is that terrible?
I can’t pretend to know exactly what she’s thinking and why, though my default assumption is that whatever it is doesn’t bode well for me.
It would leave been instructive for that friendly BBC presenter to lead her on and have her let rip.
The people on the balcony are white. Why was that a surprise or worthy of comment?
Perhaps William should have had a suitably diverse arranged marriage. We know how well arranged royal marriages go.
I think the comment was indicative of running out of anything at all interesting to say. It’s really difficult to repeat the same platitudes 20 times and still sound sincere.
Not offended. Just slightly amused.
Silly little me thought skin colour wasn’t supposed to matter any more.
Obviously not.
People like her are at war with me; they wish me ill- and the feeling is mutual.
That’s more like it tof.
This non-lady is at war with no one save her own stupidity. She’s mindlessly repeating political slogans of the so-called American left as if they would mean something anywhere outside of the USA. And the way to handle that is still to ask her politely (or not so politely) to keep her US-wisdom to herself or emigrate to the USA if she thinks it’s so dear to her that she actually wants to live it and not just cosplay it elsewhere.
She’s a grown adult with all her faculties, speaking her mind freely without coercion. What she is speaking is a direct attack on my way of life. I don’t care where she heard it from or what her motivation is. She’s the enemy.
She’s a self-appointed sock puppet (or would-be sock puppet) of certain people from across the great pond who don’t even care about her (or about Europe in general, save as some kind of not particularly interesting appendix to the USA) who seeks to fight a US domestic politics proxy war against some people she has selected for being proxy-republicans in her fantasy crusade and deserves to be treated as such.
Considering what she’s desiring to do (saddle us with silly interior US conflicts while eradicating our very existence), she’s obviously practically an enemy of mine, too. But I’m not going to become the kind of enemy she wants to turn me into.
As Mogs has already pointed out: It’s a completely idiotic thing to say anyway and it is.
Yes, I would agree.
It’s a completely idiotic thing to say anyway and I’m wondering if, rather than a faux pas, it was deliberate. She’s British and knows as well as any other Brit that the Royal family and immediate people they rub shoulders with have always been made up of white folk. Her sly comment makes her thoughts stand out a mile. She’s just made herself look like a complete moron. No apology necessary because we know it wouldn’t be sincere. More “I’m sorry I spoke my true feelings out loud and now have to face the consequences.”
If Harry and Meghan had not gone nuts and pissed on their chips they might well have been up there on the balcony. Yeah, I know she’s pretty much as ‘white’ as Harry and the rest of them.
I recall something Peter Ustinov said he did on filling in a visa form (I think). To the question of colour he described himself as ‘pink’.
“I see everyone on the balcony is white, except for Prince William, who has gamely put on blackface for the occasion…”
The only way that would have happened is if Justin Trudeau had sneaked up there.
Let the Great Replacement begin.. I have spoken.. Ms Andoh..
Could someone perhaps inform this moron that The Coronation is real and not a Netflix show about a fictious royal house and as such, it doesn’t have a principally arbitrary cast one can freely insert members of exciting ethnicities into. The British royal family is German (Elizabeth of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha having married Philip of Battenberg, leaving the UK political correctnes corrections aside for the moment) and Germans are … well … white, ie, belong to the fair-skinned European peoples.
If this offends her sense of self-importance, maybe, should could associate with the Oba of Benin instead. OTOH, to which degree typically very tribal Africans are actually happy with fashionably wet communist Western degenerates of any colour is a question which is not that easy to answer. There are no pride parades in Africa and reportedly, those barbarians don’t even think that men groping other men would be good, clean fun.
This is just a typical example of double standards at play.
If I as a native North European White skinned Briton make some derogatory remark about another person whose forefathers are not , then wow I am being racist.
If the boot is on the other foot its “nothing to see here” especially by the “racism” enablers of the Left and the likes of the BBC , MSM and the blob etc.
The reality is racism exists in all cultures and colours to a certain extent .Its human nature to have a tribe .
Its just the “Bad White person” one that gets all the attention .
The lack of reporting of other non white “racism” is compounded as the racism may be expressed in other languages that a native Briton as victim may not understand .
The more this is exposed the better as it proves that the Multi Culti thing is totally false..
I don’t fully understand what the term multiculturism wanted to achieve. But if it was a populous totally disintegrated, multi sectional, parochial and petty, full of enmity and bigotry, then it has excelled in all expectations.
As Singapore’s 30-year ruler Lee Kuan Yew observed, “In multiracial societies, you don’t vote in accordance with your economic interests and social interests, you vote in accordance with race and religion.”
In a democratic country, with politicians playing on the public’s fear and enmities, this is the inevitable outcome. It’s not rainbows and unicorns and “Imagine there’s no countries”, it’s conflict, distrust, race and religious antagonism, and a massive police and surveillance state “protecting” us from each other.
Spot on , we could see from miles away it was never going to be anything good for the indigenous population , especially as it came out of the mouth of the Fascist Bliar !!!
The indigenous have never had a say, because we don’t think correctly. Our affinity for our kin has been deemed evil. Our love for our heritage has been deemed evil.
None of my ancestors were involved in slavery or colonialism – they were poor farm labourers and shopkeepers and some even reached the heights of owning an acre or two, and a little bungalow. Clearly I must be judged guilty for the actions of black African slave traders and the financiers who funded the ships and slave markets in the New World.
None of my ancestors were involved in slavery or colonialism – they were poor farm labourers and shopkeepers and some even reached the heights of owning an acre or two, and a little bungalow.
And what if they were? Slavery, ie, the notion that people can be property of other people, has existed in all human cultures since the dawn of time until it fell out of fashion in the 19th century. Nowadays, we no longer consider it appropriate. This can thus be a yardstick for our own actions but not for those of long dead people whose ethical values were different from ours.
Likewise, colonialism means people emigrating to distant countries in order to settle there, ie, found colonies, dating back to the time when the post-mycenian Greeks started to settle all around the Mediterranean. Insofar there are already people living in such an area, this will involve a war of conquest at some level. Nothing special here either and – as opposed to slavery – something that’s still very much ongoing. Eg, there lots of Indian or Pakistani colonies in the UK and that’s supposed to be a good thing.
The US Dumm-O-Crats have judged that you look just like the people they’d expect to vote Republican (the original US anti-slavery party, by the way) and hence, their associates in Europe try to mete out the proper treatment for those to you. It doesn’t matter what these people deem evil because they’ll sooner or later start misspelling that as evi, plural evies, just out of their usual intellectual laziness. The only sensible reply is to stick to fingers up to them.
[*] Dumm, German for stupid.
Yeah.
“Love, not Hate”.
How’s that working out?

I’ve noticed how Black African royalty is terribly Black. Nelson Mandela was terrible Black being a descendant of King Ngubencuka ruler of the Thembus.
The Swaziland Royal Family is terribly Black too, I note. And Ghana is almost exclusively terribly Black.
I wonder what causes this?
How about some diversity in these terribly Black Countries?
No, silly, it’s only white countries that are failing to be diverse. Although to be fair, the real racists now have Japan in their sights for failing to seppuku their population at the altar of demographic suicide.
It was a stupid thing to say, but then saying stupid things seems rather fashionable.
Only if you are an establishment luvvie , not an oik like me lol
And demonstrated her 2nd quartile IQ. She is as thick a two short planks.
I totally understand. When I went to Africa I was shocked at how many black people there were.
Reminds me of a woman I knew who took her kids to Dineyland Paris but returned, quite shocked, because everyone was speaking French.
No, not kidding.
Disgraceful comment; disgraceful behaviour by ITV and the BBC in not calling it out. But that’s what we’ve come to expect.
Black racism against white people isn’t just tolerated – it’s encouraged by the mainstream media and many in the so-called entertainment industry.
I wonder why one of the ITV presenters didn’t point out that the only person who could have added a bit of non-white diversity to the balcony has thrown a 2-year (racist) hissy-fit and deliberately absented herself?
She needs to climb back up the tree she fell out of. Oh, sorry, have I offended someone?
The Jackson Five are “Terribly Black”, but I think Michael tried to do something about that didn’t he? ——–Oh please go on report me for a Hate Crime.—-But I would love to see this silly womans face if Nelson Mandela were to be played by George Clooney.
“…terribly white…”. Reminds me of the Starkey refrain “damned blacks”.
Similar construction although one is an adverb and the other is an adjective preceding a noun.
From the context, it seems to me she is labouring under the delusion that the UK has a multicultural social and political arrangement. But this is not the case.
In my view, the UK operates under cultural pluralism – various ethnic subcultures living under a political and judicial arrangement derived from a predominant culture’s political and moral developmental history – and this predominance is reflected in the make up of the Monarchy that is a symbol of that history and development.
As such there is no requirement for ethnic representation.
Daft cow was only on the telly because she’s black, and a woman. Not because of her expert commentary skills. Despicable comment from an obvious racist. Oh and Bridgerton is unwatchable thanks to the DIE casting.
