We’re looking for someone to join the staff of the Daily Sceptic as an Associate Editor. This is a part-time job – two-and-a-half days a week – but might eventually become full time. It is properly paid – well, properly paid for a journalism job – and comes with a pension.
Job Description
Deputise for the Editor when he’s not working, which means weekends + the Editor’s 20 holiday days/year + two bank holidays, i.e., you’ll be expected to work on two bank holidays (although not Christmas Day or Boxing Day). On the days when you’re deputising, this means:
• Writing or editing at least five posts/day (not including the News Round-Up), making sure they’re in the house style.
• Publishing the News Round-Up
• Sending the daily email newsletter to subscribers so it arrives in their inboxes at 3am. This needs to be done after midnight.
• Posting a summary of the previous day’s contents, a link to the daily newsletter and a topical cartoon on our socials, e.g. our Twitter account, the two Daily Sceptic Facebook accounts and the Editor-in-Chief’s two Facebook accounts. Also, sending that summary, link and the cartoon to the Editor-in-Chief by 1am so he can post them on his Twitter and Gettr accounts.
• Manage thedailysceptic@gmail.com inbox.
Other Duties:
• Explore and manage advertising and other income streams.
• Open and manage accounts on Locals, Patreon and SubscribeStar.
• Help organise ticketed live recordings of the Weekly Sceptic.
• Attract advertising to the podcast and manage advertisers, e.g. invoice them on time.
• Serve as a customer support person to our readers, donors and subscribers who have queries about logging in, donating, etc. (No phone calls, just emails.)
Skills and qualifications:
• Some journalistic experience, so an ability to summarise complex information and ideas, create click-bait headlines and pithy summaries for our socials (which are posted automatically by Buffer) and work quickly to deadline.
• An understanding of libel law.
• Excellent spelling, syntax and grammar.
• Mastery of English language, i.e., can write well.
• Familiarity with WordPress.
• Willingness to work long and unusual hours.
If you’re interested, please email a CV and a couple of paragraphs about why you think you’re the right person for the job to thedailysceptic@gmail.com putting “Associate Editor” in the subject line.

“Skills and qualifications:
• …create click-bait headlines…”
News editors hate this one simple trick.
The problem with “click bait headlines” is that too many people just skim-read headlines without delving into the actual content of the article with its context and nuances, leading to the possibility of mis-representation of the facts by those who quote the headline verbatim. The articles themselves may be a fair representation of the facts, but the headline taken on face-value often is not.
A wonderful insight into the gruelling life of an editor!
Mastery of English language, i.e., can write well.
If you are accomplished at the former, then the latter is superfluous…
Can think well!
Who cares about grammar these days?
When you start producing video content, give me a call! 🙂
Every weekend?? (If I’m misunderstanding, others will.)
Goodness what a busy life. Think I’ll keep on trying to enjoy my retirement (despite the current nonsense). Good luck recruiting.

No journalistic experience would be an advantage! Speak from the heart not from your bosses wage slip
