In this week’s episode of London Calling, James Delingpole and I discuss Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s unwillingness to thank the British government for securing her release at a cost of £400 million to the British taxpayer; Boris’s comparison of the crisis in Ukraine to Brexit (as well as his morning jog on Blackpool Beach); the absurd spectacle of Formula 1 drivers wearing masks while being interviewed at the Grand Prix (don’t they like taking risks?); various ingenious ways of making the Oscars more popular (we could present a Best Non-Woke Film Award); and, in Culture Corner, Sharpe’s Fortress (hooray), season five of The Last Kingdom (boo), and The Dropout (hooray).

I wasn’t aware that the UK from 2016 to 2022 had been having its citizens murdered in their thousands by nazi yobs incorporated into an ‘unofficial EU army’?
I’m also not aware of Britain being part of the French Empire any time recently?
I’m not aware of millions of the British fleeing to the USA to escape the murdering French/German/Polish ‘savages’?
Nor am I currently aware of millions of Africans pouring into Ukraine from SW Russia to
‘reach the promised land’.
Other than that, Brexit and Ukraine are absolutely identical…
Strawman! Noone said they were.
It seems that if the British government had paid back money owed to Iran, Nazann Zaghari-Ratcliffe may not have been imprisoned in the first place. This is another case of the British government keeping money it’s not entitled to with the excuse of sanctions, which is really appalling behaviour on the part of the British government and it’s not surprising that there is an asymmetrical response from countries whose money we’ve stolen. This may explain Nazann Z-R’s lack of gratitude: https://www.redressonline.com/2022/03/six-years-the-price-nazanin-zaghari-ratcliffe-paid-for-110-years-of-bad-behaviour-by-uk-governments/
“at a cost of £400 million to the British taxpayer”. How does giving Iran their money cost the British taxpayer?
In what way is it their money?
During the 1970’s the U.K. government supported the Shah of Iran/Persia and were selling arms to the regime. There was an agreement that we would supply tanks to Persia, £400,000,000 was paid to the U.K. as part of the deal. The shah was overthrown and Iran/Persia became an Islamic republic under Ayatollah Khomeni. The U.K. was no friend to Khomeni and the tanks were never supplied but neither was the money returned.
Doesn’t make you very proud to be British does it?
