[I, too, struggled to do this, so, if it works, this is how:
You need to Register to use the forums.
Once you've done this, chosen password, you'll get to setting up a profile (I did minimal, as I only want to send a message). Then, once done, you log in under your username/password.
You then get an 'envelope' logo in blue near top right. Press this and you get some kind of inbox/outbox for messages - 'private message' use this, type out and submit. It seemed to have some gremlins, so have patience. (I needed to untick 'signature' to get it sent?)
