The current situation and a couple of recent articles got me thinking is as much damage to the economy actually in our interests at this point? I know economic damage is a major plank in the reasons to oppose lockdown and im not saying its a good thing but maybe the old adage the a lesson needs to be learnt the hard way is actually what we need. As when this is finally over if there a massive crash straight away or a mini boom then a massive dip as the real effects become apparent this might turn people against the last nine months of craziness extremely quickly. I also think the main stream media who less face it hate our government might actually turn and pillory them for the damage along with all the other nhs failings and cock ups. Is this just wishful thinking or will a beacon of opportunity open up when the panic is over and people are inclined to think more rationally? im also thinking if Boris goes and his successor did not have much involvement in the lockdown polices this could also have an impact.

I doubt it would make much difference now, when people are already being vaccinated.

It's notable that Sweden's relatively lax policy came about primarily because of how pessimistic the Swedish public health authorities were regarding how long it would take to approve vaccines...

The damage is already done to the economy, there are still 10M people on furlough.

If anything it’s Rishi realising that it can’t be reopened without it all collapsing because people’s habits have changed that’s contributing as much to continued lockdown as anything else.

Kicking the can down the road until he can work out what to do.

It’s got UBI written all over it.

These people are so stuck in the mindset lockdown works they'll blame not locking down earlier, harder and for longer for a recession.

They long since abandoned rational thought.

It'll be interesting to see the long term effects on (i) the nation's health and (ii) the state of the NHS which a long term recession, triggered by measures introduced as "saving the NHS", will have.
