There is an obvious reason for all this and Dom Cummings has left it to read.
OK, we sceptics know this is all a massive overreaction given the real risk, and lots of us are going a bit nutty, because we know that SAGE and hence the government also know this is all a massive overreaction. In short, they know it, we know it and they know we know it, and we know they know it…etc.
All that knowledge about each other begs an interesting question: why would SAGE/government persist in an obvious distortion beyond the point where their platform starts to burn and they get burned up too? Why would they keep on furiously spinning their wheels for no obvious reason? Well there _is_ an obvious reason. They are ploughing on because this is a dry run. They are doing all this merely to test their power to do this, in case a real emergency does arise; since they know that some day one will. They have to know for sure that they have the apparatus to control entire populations indefinitely. The skill by which this has been achieved is very impressive; I have to give them that. But that is what this is. An opportunistic test to see that all the levers are connected and can be operated to beat the population into submission and always obey everything. It doesn't matter what it costs, since the population has to pay in th end. This idea can be read, right out in the open on Dom Cumming blog, where he talks back in January about
* a new government with a significant majority and little need to worry about short-term
unpopularity while trying to make rapid progress with long-term problems.
* decision-making institutions at the apex of government.
* the Overton Window, the limits of acceptable policy, freedom restrictions
* Complexity, prediction, and politics
* Superforecasting, modelling…
* bio-labs global pandemics
* a community release that could lead to a worldwide pandemic with many fatalities.
yes, coincidentally that's all online in mad dom's blog. e.g.

Unfortunately, they have been caught crying "wolf". There was always disillusion with politicians but now I think they have brought about disillusion with science. If a really serious pandemic comes along, fewer people will listen than would have done before this fiasco.

It is good, not unfortunate. First we must conclude that this, indeed, the game. That's a job for historians. We can merely point them at the truth, as we see it. I for one think it is true, it's all a trial run, that's the only interpretation that makes sense, but I'll listen to other explanations.

What is unfortunate is the result of their actions - not that they have been caught. Whether those actions were due to incompetence or intention, some trust in science has been lost. When that happens, superstition can take its place.
Will read the blog later - but in my worst moments I kind of agree with swinchard's theory.
I do hope they are going to be called out though, and before too long; I just dread what event it will take for people to 'wake up'.
I watched a bit of Mike Yeadon's deposition to the German lawyer yesterday and RF (lawyer, can't recall his exact name) remarked that everything Yeadon described was also going on in Germany, Canada etc.
This kind of thing gives me hope, but It might just be another let-down.
