The So-Called 'Freedom Pass'

Well now we hear of a so-called "Freedom Pass," allowing freedom only on the condition that one obtains two negative Covid tests in the space of a week.

DON'T FALL FOR IT!!!!!

This is a nightmare. Look at the Government's woeful track record of delivering testing and straight data. Anyone can foresee that many, many people will be unable to obtain the tests and, even if they do get tested, may fail to receive the promised clearance. Newsnight should start drafting its script already now. And Matt Hand Cock can start prepping his mealy-mouthed mea non culpa:

'Yes, there are always going to be teething issues,' will say Hand Cock. 'But the fact remains that for most people who test negative twice in seven days, excluding Saturdays, due to the glitch which as the Prime Minister has said will soon be fixed, this Government is already delivering Freedom with only minimal and irrelevant delay of usually two weeks, by which time we would be irresponsible not to point out that the particular Freedom Pass applied for has of course expired, but nonetheless is still very much delivered, and that is this Government delivering real Freedom while still Protecting the NHS. Now stop being so selfish, Emily, or vee vill hef your Freedom Pess refiewed!"

"It hasn't even arrived yet, Minister."

But of course the problem is and remains not just the ludicrously failing methods but what the whole thing represents: the Government's shocking and absolutely unacceptable seizure of our freedom to exercise our own wisdom, judgement, and discretion -- not just to engage in but also to refrain from social mixing, and to prioritise our lives. There is no personal virtue, no life, no good, in just following these blasted orders.

They are taking us for fools! Governments everywhere are posing themselves as gatekeepers of everyone's personal and social freedom, and they MUST be stopped! This is a disaster that will long outlive Covid; it is a mendacious destruction of social contracts through the whole free world.

Absolutely agreed.they must be stopped. They are continuing to control the masses with manipulation and control ( they are out of control) no words can describe my utter disgust. More people need to wake up and attempt to do something about it or we are lost.

"Governments everywhere are posing themselves as gatekeepers of everyone's personal and social freedom, and they MUST be stopped!"

Absolutely but how can it be stopped?

Yes, an excellent post.

I often wonder if some kind of underground parallel society will emerge, where services, events etc. will be provided for those of us, by those of us, who refuse to comply.

"Absolutely but how can it be stopped?"

I think we need good-spirited, highly-visible civil disobedience. Government needs to face highly-public, highly-visible disobedience that is so obviously good that they will know it can't be policed as criminal. Actually, the reason they are creating space for Christmas is precisely their fear of having everyone see the edifice of their extreme edicts totally crumble. That's the crumbling we want, right?

It could be something mundane, like grandparents going to visit and hugging grandchildren. For example, if lots and lots of grandparents and grandchildren did this and posted photos and videos of it online, all with the line "Love is life, not a crime," it would do amazing work politically and on the public psyche. Same for other unambiguous acts of love and devotion that are against the rules.
