Our local pubs had, until this week, been happy for you to scribble your name on a pad by the door.
Now they're asking you to scan a code on your smart phone. I don't like that for a variety of reasons...
Is it possible to get a SIM that has no contract, is not registered to a name or address and which comes pre loaded with a data allowance? (I think they call these "burners" in the movies!)
I haven't checked recently, but I think they are readily available in supermarkets. But:
(i) remember to buy your SIM card with cash;
(ii) even if you pay in the pub with cash, I am sure that the police would have ways to track you down if they thought it was worth the trouble - although they probably wouldn't bother for this;
(iii) the pub will probably insist on your paying with a card, so you will be traceable that way (not by the pub, but by the authorities).
I am also very interested to know what these QR codes to scan do. I guess some of them are linked to apps you have already downloaded anyway. I think the new codes which venues are required to obtain under SI 2020 number 1005 (link below) are like that: the venue has to display them, and you can use them if you have downloaded the right app. Others may take you to a webpage to fill in your details. But it is possible that others get your phone to download something without your knowing what it is. If that happened it would be a horrendous interference.
Also note that under SI 2020 number 1005, while the venue has to make electronic sign-in available, they do not have to insist that you use it. Paper and pen remain legally permitted. There is however a risk that the management of large chains will issue an order to all branches to require customers to use the QR code.
I'm interested in this too. Thinking of buying an old school burner phone with no smart capability.
Recommendations welcome.
Any major company will send you a sim free of charge. Just request online. You will need an address but can put any name. Then go to a newsagent etc and buy credit with cash. Use the code they give you to get the credit on the phone.
Many newsagents in big cities and towns at least will also sell sim cards for a few quid. You can pay in cash and top up the same way.
Burner phones can still be traced. It's just the location data is a lot weaker and much less accurate.
I think pubs will still (begrudgingly) accept a false name and address scrawled in Biro if you don't have a smartphone.
