According to the Evening Standard https://www.standard.co.uk/news/london/lockdown-lockdown-monday-sadiq-khan-a4551571.html , London Mayor, Sadiq Khan, “has reportedly warned Boris Johnson that London needs to have coronavirus restrictions rolled out as early as Monday to avoid a huge surge in cases.
“The Mayor of London is in favour of new restrictions, including 10pm curfews on pubs, to stop the spread of the disease.”
Khan's justification for these measures is that the London case curve is closely shadowing the sharply rising line found in other parts of the country.
I checked the BBC's local area info. resource https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51768274 for the London Borough of Haringey, where I live, only to find that the number of cases had dropped over the last week surveyed (end date 18 September).
Expecting this to be a local blip, I consulted the BBC's national map https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-51768274 (scroll down a bit) which I have been following closely over the past weeks with a close eye on London. From memory, I cannot see any increase in the number of dark blue compared to light blue patches – the dark indicating more cases than the light - compared to yesterday. Enfield, just north of Haringey, has definitely got a shade paler, as has Haringey itself.
Finally I took a look at the London official figures https://data.london.gov.uk/dataset/coronavirus--covid-19--cases . These only go up to 11 September, but just before that there is a definite decline, although apparently the figures may be revised upwards.
So, rather than rising, all the specific info I can dig out shows a decline in the number of cases in London.
So what is Khan referring to? Have I missed or misunderstood something? The Evening Standard article does not provide any London-specific information…
