YouGov often have interesting results on their website. This piece clearly shows the support across the country for lockdowns (and where opposition is strongest).

Like all sheep, they will simply go where they are led....it's a matter of finding the right leader going in the right direction. Whether there will be anywhere worth heading soon, well that's a different question...

Here's a random thought about persuasion - may or may not make any difference. When there is something traditionally big coming up, make a point of asking people "What are you planning for Halloween/Bonfire Night/Christmas/New Year? Let's hope people can have big get-togethers". It might remind them to think "Hey, these rules are a big imposition, when are they going to end? I want them to end."

Yes, that is a good start. Then needs to come the reasoning - the benefit for the whole population - otherwise they may consider it a selfish motivation and not act.
We see this altruistic wish to do good in the public at large - hence the general compliance. So this is what really needs to be stimulated. When altruism and understanding come together, everyone's a winner, as the song goes.

I agree that the situation is depressing, not so much because of the details of the current moment, but because of what is being revealed about the mental and spiritual state of the nation. What would most help me and probably others now would be to meet some people in my local area (North East London) who may be on the same wavelength .

Moreover, while it is no doubt paranoid to think in these terms at this stage, grass-roots networking is also proof against interruptions of online communication.
