I have to confess to not quite having the courage to go bare faced into shops!
I'm currently using those disposable blue masks that are very common. They make your face hot and it's very unpleasant.
Are there any masks that are much easier to breathe through? (I could not care less whether they are effective or not...I think we know the answer to that one)
Any valved N95 or N99 mask will work. If you can find one. The valve with the air-seal makes them very comfortable even for long periods of time.
I use a N99 respirator mask (3M) which I got in February before the first reliable data was published by the South Koreans in March. When the IFR of SARs CoV 2 was not accurately known and the CFR was very like SARs Cov 1 in 2003. So it still looked like a serious health threat. I only wear the mask when required by businesses purely out of courtesy to the staff who have to put up with all this nonsense.
As you said almost all face covering worn are utterly worthless. SARs Cov 2 like all human corona-viruses is spread by respiratory aerosols < 2 microns. As there is not much sneezing or wet coughs with symptomatic HCOV infections there are almost no large sized infected airborne particles > 2 microns. So 95% plus of the face coverings I've seen people wear offer zero protection against < 2 micron airborne aerosols. 4 layer surgical masks when worn properly give short term N20 protection, until wetted by respiratory water vapor. Then maybe N5 at best. All other masks are N0. Filter zero percent of < 2 microns airborne particles.
Only N95 and N99 respiratory masks give any real protection against HCOV's. But only when worn indoors when you spend extended periods of time in a badly ventilated space with no free air flows. That the only physical space where any risk of infection density per Sq M reaching > 10^4 needed for a 50% infection probability in 10 to 20 minutes exposure. Outdoors a complete waste of time given the physics of repository aerosols. Zero risk.
I dont wear masks anywhere - so far noone has asked me why or stopped me, if they do I d say I am exempt. But before I made that decision to be fresh faced as nature intended I cut out slits in the paper disposable one to make it more breatheable. Try it - I cut sits at folds.
I used the material from an old T-shirt. It’s cotton so more breathable and also pretty thin so probably not fit for purpose but that’s the whole point! 😆
