The story is pure lies. A plant. Unless the Delta was deliberately bio-engineers as a bio-weapon there is no way you would get a R0 > 12. Which is how infectious chicken pox is.
The lead author of the WaPo article has just published an atrociously written book about how the COVID pandemic in the US was all Trumps fault. And that Fauci is some kind of Scientific God. The book is basically unreadable and reads like a badly written High School essay.
The story is based on a "leak" i.e a document passed on by someone from the White House, of a presentation at some CDC meeting that sounds very light on science were the scare story was the part of the presentation based on "unpublished research".
So ever single part of the story is not only unverifiable but follows the standard pattern of a politically motivated planted story in the media. Key parts fabricated.
So just think of stories like this as pure propaganda to prepared the ground for future plans. None good. The good news is that at least half the states would refuses any such moves. Plus Thank God for the Second Amendment.
But the people in power at the moment are truly clinically deranged.

Well spotted. The CDC has now gone public (on Fri 30th) with the data that has caused Biden to start droning on about wearing masks again. Basically they have research from an outbreak of the delta variant in and around Provincetown, which is in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. It wasn't a big outbreak, just 469 cases, but the headline news is that 74% of the cases occurred in fully vaccinated people.
Also, "...Cycle threshold values were similar among specimens from patients who were fully vaccinated and those who were not..." I believe this means that the viral load measured in vacc & non-vacc people was more or less the same. The CDC says this implies that the vacc & non-vacc people would be equally capable of transmitting the virus (without any discussion of the issue of whether or not asymptomatic people are capable of transmitting the virus).
So, the CDC issued a press a press release calling for masking of all vacc & non-vacc people. If you don't want to read the CDC links there's a good summary in this RT article.
The RT article also highlights a bit of a rift developing between the CD and the WHO over the assertion that vacc people can transmit the virus to the same degree as non-vacc people.

The problem the UK has is the old stats and metrics it used are completely unsuited for a vaccinated population. They tell us nothing at all useful.
Everything is driven by this pathological obsession with cases and trying to find every case possible.
That might be useful early on when we knew nothing and is useful for truly deadly viruses but it simply isnt useful for a disease where almost nobody at all gets seriously ill from.

The back story for the leak is that one faction in Fort Capitol Hill is trying to force a sort of coup de main as the winter flu season kicks in. Trying to ram through mandatory vaccinations and internal passports a.k.a vaccine passports. My guess The first sign of this will be the FDA setting aside the EUA for the vaccines and giving them provisional authorization so that right to not get vaccinated with a EUA vaccine is taken away.
There is a lot of chatter at the moment that the main driving force behind mandatory vaccination of the US military is to force out all those people who would refuse to follow orders that go against Posse Comitatus. There are very large numbers of people resigning. Or planning to resign soon. The word from old timers is the US Army is currently being gutted at the moment, as bad as the 1970s. Between the forced vaccination and the political witch hunts.
Thats is why the White House is planting stories like this at the moment.

The White House is trying to force everyone to get vaccinated while at the same time they opened up the Mexican borders allowing several hundred thousands illegal immigrants to cross every month. No tests, no vaccinations and the few that are detained disappear once they are released. Yet they same White House wont allow any foreign visitors from Europe or the UK to enter the country. Or US citizens to enter without a COVID test. No matter what their health or vaccination status.
So anyone in the US media who says that COVID is some huge public health emergency are totally full of sh*t. If it was then three quarters of a million illegal immigrants would not have been allowed to cross the border. To then disappear. I went looking for where that R0 of 6 to 7 comes from. All roads so far lead back to a publication by SAGE were Delta (B.1.617.x) is model "estimated" to be 40% to 60% more infectious than the Alpha variant. Thats it. And to get an R0 of 6 or 7 the Alpha variant would have to have a R0 of around 4.
In the year and a half since I watched the first SARs Cov 2 epidemiological model presentation on January 21'st 2020 by HKU Med not one single plausible spread model has used an R0 above 2.75. And almost all quickly converged on an R0 < 2.0 consensus as more clinical data became available and SARs CoV 2 became endemic community spread.
But Ferguson's group from Imperial have been using R0 values of between 3 and 4 from the very beginning without a shred of clinical evidence. Or historical epidemiological evidence. Which is why all Imperial College models are junk and every single prediction made by Ferguson's models have been totally wrong. Usually catastrophic wrong, mathematically speaking.
The source of the SAGE Delta R0 6 to 7 "estimate" is the Scientific Pandemic Influenza Group on Modelling (SPI-M). The SPI-M has three primary members of the group. The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Warwick University. And our old friends from Imperial College London. I dont remember a second group at Imperial putting out model results so it must be Ferguson.
So yet again SAGE has been publishing a fraudulent model number from the Imperial modelling group. From Ferguson's Frauds.
If you put the consensus R0 for Alpha into the Delta R0 estimate calculation you get around 2.25. About the same as the R0 for community spread for a non seasonal influenza in its initial attack phase. Thats it.
As SARs CoV 2 is already endemic community spread all Delta is doing is variant displacement. The clinical pathology of Delta looks like it is little different from Alpha so the IFR/CFR and weekly / monthly seasonal adjusted mortality will change little as Delta displaces Alpha in the general population.

Now this is where the very deliberate obfuscation by the CDC starts.
The infected in question were overwhelmingly male. 85%. Turns out they were also overwhelming gay and the single biggest cluster spread was a de-facto gay sex party.
This outbreak has absolutely nothing to do with the infection characteristics of the Delta variant in the general population. Nothing. And the CDC knows this.
@jmc I visited Provincetown in about 2007 and whilst walking along Main Street holding hands with my girlfriend it was (very politely) pointed out to me that Provincetown was a gay town !
FWIW Meng Zhang1,&; Jianpeng Xia et al (China CDC) calculate a Delta R0 of 3.2.
PHE is actually quoting a hybrid Rt/R0 due to how it obtains its data.
R0 is always going to be higher than Rt in a population with any prior exposure at all.
