I don't mean the comments, they've always been bad. I mean the format.

You can no longer search for a user's remarks, nor can you position an image.

We're still having a few teething troubles with this new software, but I think the image problem has been solved, or at least it is possible to upload images and have them displayed. As to the search function, it's up at the right of the forum menu, below the site's main menu.

@ian-rons

Is there a way of increasing the character (word) limit on the forum posts?  It seems very low (equivalent of three short to average paragraphs) compared to the 5k+ limit on comments to articles.

Sometimes a more detailed comment is really needed - especially for complex/substantive issues.  Obviously you can do the twitter style multiple comment routine, but as each are (mainly) moderated, you cannot always guarantee each gets ok'ed in order and within a short space of time, to allow proper back-and-forth discussion rather than at cross-purposes.

Thanks.

I've increased it for now. We'll see how it goes. We just want to discourage people being too long-winded and/or off-topic, and from re-posting entire articles from other sites (I don't know why people do that, but they do).

I agree.  Just got back from holiday with no internet to find that I can't interpret what I am seeing in the forums.  It wasn't good before but it is definitely worse now

We're open to suggestions on how to improve it. There are a few different options when it comes to the layout, but I'm not really sure how people would like it to look.

Maybe it's my age, but I am having difficulty finding my way around this new layout. It seems less forum and more against'em.

How do I mark threads and sub-forums as read, for example?

How do I switch off notifications? I got a notification of a response to a post because the responder had put @myname in his response.

Any suggestions on how to improve the layout would be welcome. As to marking thread, etc., as "read", it should do that automatically -- at least for new threads. During the changeover I didn't think to mark all the old ones as "read", but I'll look into doing that.

I'll also look into the notifications issue. There's probably a setting somewhere.

Thanks Ian. I was notified of your reply because you quoted me and @mikeaustin was present. I was notified before without a quote but by someone manually entering @mikeaustin.

Regarding marking read, yes. Individual read posts do get marked read. However, forums usually have a button 'mark all read'. The previous layout had this.

Yes, I've turned off all @user "mention" notifications, since there's seemingly no way for individual users to turn it off for themselves. You can still "subscribe" to topics.

I've also managed to find a "Mark all read" button, which you will now be able to see right near the bottom of the forums, under the forum statistics.
