The whole situation just makes everyday social existence even more toxic than it already was and it was already terrible. People now have reason to be suspicious and challenging of anyone they don't like. It is an open invitation to jobsworth's everywhere to interfere with others. I left the pool today and was quizzed about whether I had wiped down the swimtag that I wear. I dowse it in gel when I remove it but it's been in chlorinated water against my skin, how could it carry the virus? yet the staff institute these things. The rules are not technically effective anyway since in the gym it is too small for people to be able to sustain distances but, now, you can feel the toxicity and suspicion everywhere. People really seem to believe this is like some killer virus like on the cinema. I doubt the UK will ever actually recover. This behaviour will become sedimented. I am now neurotically aware of keeping a distance so that I am not challenged and you actually feel, or I do anyway, that you might be accused of endangering others. It is an insane way to live.
Even when this has gone there will be residual anxieties about outsiders spreading disease and it will just make the world a more anonymous and hostile place.
Another thing they are threatening to do is send me to jail for 5 years for spreading coronavirus misinformation if I file a complaint or speak about this incident on social media or in the legacy media.
Welcome - but why would it take a bad encounter with a power-crazed cop to make you skeptical?
I more begrudgingly accepted it as a necessary evil and it would only be temporary.
Anyway, that's awful. I had no idea the borders between provinces were being policed. That is utterly ridiculous. Was this cop from the Quebec provincial police force? They have always had a bad reputation.
Not even a real cop, he was from the Department of Corrections, who, since they work in prisons, tend to be bigger psychopaths... and the people helping me just informed me that the guy works at the facility where Canada holds immigrants awaiting deportation. That facility has been in the news a lot for grievous cases of abuse, many resulting in death, and they are unaccountable to any oversight body.
They are using them at the border checkpoint though.
As a fellow Canadian, I would very much appreciate if you made a formal complaint, spoke up and even involve the media. What happened to you is wrong and I'm sure it's happening to others too. But I also totally understand if you feel it's not worth it because of potential consequences. In solidarity.
I mean, I'm a white upper middle class woman with a good job and a nice car, if I was black or indigenous I probably wouldn't be posting this because the cop would have pulled the trigger.
you have an first nations user name Souriquois, mikmac? It's adventurous to take a 1,000 mile mid winter-road trip from the maritimes through Montreal, Quebec and half of Ontario to Toronto! Who were the cops, surete?
