You're right, the details differ. For example, for long periods in France one had to download a form, fill it in and produce it on demand if you left your house. Scandalously, Spain banned children leaving their house for months. Australia and NZ turned themselves into prison islands. The UK has perhaps excelled them all in the petty indignities and absurd intrusions into private life (don't hug/how to walk through a house to reach a back garden safely/have sex in positions which are not face-to-face (no, really!)).

But most of all (and back on topic) the UK Government is the world leader in scaring its people witless.

Johnson et al were not sufficiently intellectually robust, honest and curious to (a) ask the scientists the right questions; and (b) to then understand and interrogate their answers in a way that might have led to a saner, more proportionate response. That latter explanation, as unpalatable as it is, still seems the most plausible to me.

Nicely summarised - it is certainly how I look at it. I tend to balk at conspiracy theories.

So now we're down to 3 deaths in England and seeing hospital admissions continue to drop, despite the "terrifying Indian Surge", while 38 million have been vaccinated. Yet if you tune into a commercial radio station or TV channel all you seem to get is government sponsored fear-porn proganda being blasted out, morning noon and night, telling us what a great thing you'll be doing by getting tested. FFS!!!!!
And if you sit in a pub garden for a pint nowhere near anyone else you're still being asked for contact details. WHY????
And we're still four weeks away from getting back to something like 'normal'. WHY????
WTF are we waiting for? No doubt the cretins at SAGE are desperately searching for a stat they can wheel out to delay opening.
But why the hell aren't any of our newspapers demanding freedom now. Why are they still so docile? Don't any of them have a spine.
Johnson said he'd follow the science. Well that was just another fat lie because if he was doing he'd have everything open NOW.

Oh, Jesus, what's the fecking use, even this site just churns out boring articles packed full of stats that hardly anyone reads. Toby, you and your colleagues have worked very hard in producing this site and I'm very glad of it, but isn't it time you started to get medieval on this governments arse.

The media are owned puppets same as the government..its never been about saving the people..its been about jabbing us all.and committing mass genocide of its population....
There is plenty of paid opposition about that's for sure..
Plenty of real opposition to which is censored non stop..they pay people to censor anything that goes against the government narrative..
It's the awake people who are challenging and asking the real.questions..
I would agree with you on the boring articles they churn out..
There is no real.hard hitting challenge from anywhere against the government narrative except as I said from the awake..
🙄

I'm currently reading this (excellent ) book but find it so disturbing sometimes that I have to put it down and do something else.

I've also just read the resignation letter from a nurse in Conservative Woman. This whole thing seems by now so institutionalised, so impossible to fight on an individual level, that the die is cast. I wish I didn't feel so pessimistic on this beautiful day.

It's good to see a thread about the book; the fact that it sold out so quickly indicates the underlying unease about the doublethink and superstition behind the official narrative. I hope the thread grows as more read the book

The State of Fear is greatly amplified by our resident anti-vaxxers, who first insist the virus is nothing worry about and then insist distance-keeping precautions could never work, and then insist  vaccine  medicine  is also pointless, unless it is a novel, untested medicine, e.g.HCQ, ivermectin ... and that is why we have a State of Fear, in a nutshell, it is all down to pure ignrance and panic.

No - the ignorance and panic has been carefully orchestrated by SPI -B, some members of SAGE/iSage and opportunistic activists since the beginning of this nightmare.

Please explain this 'collective' to which you refer: 'our resident anti-vaxxers'? I don't happen to know any such people. There are those among us who will instinctively resist a hard-sell, especially when it comes from evangelistic public figures on the make, who readily resort to threats.

@jane-g what unites this gang of evil wastrels, how do they learn to trust one another? can they be sure no one will blow the gaff on  this scam? will  they live the rest of their lives wondering if they might be rumbled by a disgruntled empoyee of a former lover etc? is it all for fun?

This is really a source of hope - the reason why good will eventually triumph over evil. Reiner Fuellmich refers to the 'moral competence' that is on the side of the good-hearted. Those that have selfish motives only stay together while it benefits themselves. Those with selfless motives stay together while it benefits others.

Perhaps I should have said selfless behaviour rather than selfless motive. Motives are usually mixed. The resulting behaviour benefits others but the initiating motive benefits the self.

@mikeaustin everybody believes that anti-vax behaviour is dusgustingly selfish.

That's the view being encouraged among unreflective persons. Even were I an anti-vaxxer, the views of the herd long ceased to be a concern to me.

Next?

@lordsnooty

The vaccine is no different from any other medical intervention. It needs to pass the tests for necessity, efficacy and safety. And that requires evidence. Which is in very short supply for this intervention.

And that makes informed choice and informed consent very difficult. Especially for someone as young as 12.

'Anti-vaxx' is just a loathsome, weaponised term used to randomly attack those who may simply believe in the principles of evidence-based medicine and informed choice.
